FAME for February
| |
FAME is a six-year cycle of fine arts lessons that focus on one artist and one composer for six lessons throughout the school year. Because no lesson is repeated throughout the six years, students never get the same FAME lesson twice. This is FAME III out of VI.
This is FAME's fifteenth year at Strandwood! We are thrilled to have enjoyed strong administration, staff, PTA and parent support throughout that time.
FAME takes place on Tuesdays throughout the month. If you're interested in observing, please contact your child's teacher for their schedule. Parent visitors are always welcome. Links of the Artists and Musicians take you to their wikipedia page were you can find out more information about them. Images or sound files of the art and music will be linked if available.
Our FAME lessons are taught by a wonderful team of enthusiastic parent volunteers (referred to as docents). Our docents attend pre-lesson meetings to review and prepare for the art and music portions and the accompanying art lesson.
Coordinators: Kendra Phair & Laurie Wozniak
Art: "Blue Boy" by Thomas Gainsborough
Music: "Sonata in C Major" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Parenting Tip of the Week From www.parents.com | |
Happy Parents, Happy Kids.
Your kids learn so much from you, so make sure your marriage is teaching them the right things about relationships. For example, even if kids kick and scream when the babysitter comes over, seeing their parents go on a regular date night will teach them the importance of staying close. Click here for the article. Don't forget to click "next" at the bottom of each section.

FPHE 4th Quarter Newsletter
2011 Annual Campaign Goal: $60,000
| The Foundation for Pleasant Hill Education is starting 2011 with one key resolution: double the grants we awarded last year. Thanks to community support, grants awarded went from $14,000 in 2009 to over $30,000 in 2010. We want to award $60,000 this year. It's an aggressive goal, but we will be successful with your donation of $55 or more.

| Education News and Information | School Closure News: Superintendent Suggests that Monte Gardens, Silverbrook and Sequoia Elementary and Sequoia Middle be removed from the list of suggested closures. "Superintendent Steven Lawrence recommended narrowing the list of possible schools to close from seven to three, with the ultimate goal of closing two. He suggested closing Glenbrook Middle School, along with either Wren Avenue or Holbrook elementary schools in Concord." Click here to read the Theresa Harrington article from the Contra Costa Times. The Board expects to vote on the school closures on February 8th.
A closer look at Glenbrook Middle School's $1.7 million improvement grant. (by Theresa Harrington) "One question that arises as the Mt. Diablo district considers closing Glenbrook Midle School is: what would happen to its School Improvement Grant?
Rose Lock, assistant superintendent for Student Achievement and School Support, told me today (Thursday) that the district is exploring whether it could continue to receive funding by amending its application for school closure. Previously, she said, she told Board President Gary Eberhart that the district would not be able to receive the funding if the school closed. That would be the case if the district closed the school and didn't amend its application, she said." Read the rest of the article by clicking here.
