Anti-Bulling Week
| This week Strandwood will be participating in an Anti-Bullying-No Name Calling campaign. Each student will make a pledge and be discussing the subject in their classroom. Every morning will begin with a poem read to the school by the student council.
PTA hosted our second parent education speaker last Thursday, Karen Lingenfelter, who led a discussion titled "Bulling In Our Schools and What Parents Need to Know." If you missed the talk and would like the hand-out that she provided, they will be available in the office or by clicking here. For more information visit the school website at www.strandwood.mdusd.org.

Recent Parent Education Series
Focuses on Bullying
| |
"Approximately 160,000 children miss school every day in the United States for fear of being bullied; more than 50 suicides have been linked to prolonged bullying; and approximately 85 percent of school shootings have revenge against bullies as a major motive, according to Dr. Ted Zeff, a practicing psychologist and author."
Last weeks presentation by Karen Lingenfelter titled "Bullying In Our Schools - What Parents Need To Know" was very well received. Those in attendence were treated to an informative and frank discussion on the problems facing our children today and it tied in great with this weeks "Anti-Bullying - No Name calling" theme. If you missed the presentation you can click here to review the handout and PowerPoint presentation.
The national PTA Newsletter dated January 14th also had a great article, "Six Warning Signs That your child is Being Bullied". To view the newsletter please click here.
The next parent Education Series presentation, "Capable Students" with Kim Kippenhaven-Klute, will be Thursday, February 17th. Set the date aside and look for more information on this presentation in future Roadrunners.

School Closure Study Session: The School Closure Committee presented their 3 closure recommendations to the Board of Education last week. During that meeting, Board member Gary Eberhart wanted to remove option 3, closing the choice schools (Sequoia and Monte Gardens). Mr. Eberhart has released an excellent explanation of why he thought that option should be taken off the field. To read his informational article please click here. Neither of the remaining 2 options has an effect on Strandwood.
The entire presentation is available on the district website or you can view it by clicking here. The ratings for each school starts on page 7. Strandwood received a rating of 83 out of a possible 120. The schools still on the chopping block are Glenbrook Middle (57 points), Silverwood Elementary (56 points), Wren Avenue Elementary (58 points) and Holbrook Elementary (66 points).
The board also asked Superintendent Steven Lawrence to explore consolidating small necessary high schools, look at redrawing boundaries around crowded schools, investigate the possibility of bringing special education students in nonpublic schools to closed sites and to explore the possibility of building a high school in Bay Point with Measure C funds.
The Board of Education will hold its next meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, January 25. To view the agenda click here.
