Every Monday, Email Club members receive important information regarding upcoming events and communications from The PTA and Strandwood staff via the Roadrunner. The Roadrunner also provides links to important flyers and new items on the PTA and school websites. Turn in Those Boxtops Today

Our November winner was Kayley Rathert in Ms. McGurk's class. The deadline for the December contest will be Monday, January 3rd. There are still several gift cards to choose from, so turn in your box tops now and perhaps you will be our next lucky winner!

| After School Spanish Classes | | Beginning in January, 2011, Strandwood will offer a new and improved after school Spanish class. Spanish for Kids runs from January 4th - March 31st. After School Chess
| The Winter session will be held from January 5 through March 9 (ten weeks) on Wednesdays from 12:35 to 1:35. Grades K-5 are welcome (but not late K friends due to the time, sorry) **Note the class starts right after we return from Winter Break.
To register, go online to www.berkeleychessschool.org and choose the link on the left to "sign up for a class". The fee for ten weeks is $120 for the first child, and siblings are half price.

Parent Project Jr.® "Loving Solutions" MDUSD Parent Education Project | Education, support and resources for parents of strong-willed children ages 5 to 10 years. This six-week course takes the successful principles used in Parent Project, Sr. and adapts them to the needs of younger children. You will learn basic principles that will bring you and your child closer together - not push you apart. Learn how to encourage self-respect and cooperation. Parents who complete the course will know how to: identify ideals, rules and tools for the family, respond appropriately to children's choices and structure concrete solutions for challenging situations. Classes start January 24th, 2011.

| Kindergarten Pre-Registration
Opens on February 1st
| Pre-registration of children eligible for kindergarten in August 2011 will be conducted in all Mt. Diablo Unified School District elementary schools on a first-come basis starting Tuesday, February 1, 2011. The hours of registration will be 9:00 - 11:00 am and 1:00 - 3:00 pm. Children who will reach the age of five (5) years on or before December 2, 2011, are eligible for kindergarten in August.

Education News
| MDUSD School Closure Committee: The School Closure Committee has worked extremely hard over the past three months reviewing District demographic data as well as facilities data about the individual school sites. Through this process, they developed and considered several school closure options. The committee will share its work and findings with the Board at a study session in January. The date has not been decided, but will be posted on the District website as soon as it's finalized. The Board study session agenda will include: (click here to read the newsletter)
Budget Update: At the December 14, 2010 Board meeting, the Board adopted a qualified budget. There are three types of budgets: positive, qualified, and negative. (continue)
State Department of Education SACRAMENTO - State Schools Chief Jack O'Connell highlights the need to improve education and services for children based on Children Now's Report Card. "The mediocre level of service to the youngest Californians is alarming, and a disgrace to a state that can do much better by its children despite the ongoing economic crisis." SACRAMENTO - State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell today announced the release of a new publication focusing on the California standards in the earliest grades that include the newly adopted Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
"A Look at Kindergarten through Grade Three in California Public Schools is a useful tool that will offer teachers a better understanding of grade-level standards," said O'Connell. "This publication is an insightful and invaluable resource for schools that will help level the education playing field so all children can learn." Click here to read the report.
