FAME for November
FAME 3 Week 2 ART: The Marriage of Giocanni Arnolfini and His Bride  by Jan van Eyck   (Click any underlined title to learn more)

MUSIC: Minuet in G and Toccata & Fugue by
Johann Sebastian Bach  (click on the song title to listen)

Both of these artists lived a very long time ago, so students learn about some firsts in this lesson. They learn that Jan van Eyck was probably one of the first painters to use oil paint and compare its texture with that of other paints. They also spend some time looking at the symbols in van Eyck's painting and talk about how artists communicate through their paintings. They discover that Bach did not write for the piano (because it wasn't invented yet) and how to identify a fugue, one of Bach's favorite musical forms.
Last Week to Add To Student Directory

On This Day in History

NOVEMBER 15,

1867- The first stock ticker is unveiled in New York City. The advent of the ticker ultimately revolutionized the stock market by making up-to-the-minute prices available to investors around the country. Prior to this development, information from the New York Stock Exchange, which has been around since 1792, traveled by mail or messenger.

1956 - Elvis makes his movie debut in "Love Me Tender"

1965 - At the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, 28-year-old Californian Craig Breedlove sets a new land-speed record--600.601 miles an hour--in his car, the Spirit of America, which cost $250,000 and was powered by a surplus engine from a Navy jet.

Reflections Program
The Reflection Committee would like to acknowledge all the students who participated in the PTA sponsored Reflections Program.   Entries were judged on how closely the piece relates to the theme, based on the artwork itself and the artist statement. Additional points were awarded for creativity and mastery of medium. We were so impressed with the passion and thought that went into creating works of art to represent the theme, "Together We Can!"
