Fall Book Fair

Fall Book Fair has ended!  And we couldn't have done it without you!

Yes, all of you.  From the generous teachers and parents that opened their wallets to the song of "Come on, just one more?", to Mrs. Kim, Mrs. Burns and Mr. Brown that came back after a long day at school, to read so energetically to our children, to Girl Scout troop #31125 that served popcorn with smiles, and to our FANTASTIC parent volunteers that stepped up at every turn.

THANK YOU for such a successful fundraiser for the library. The Fall book fair raised $3,000 for our library...NEW BOOKS ARE ON THE WAY!   See you in the Spring!

Kelly Martinelli and Katie Roarty

Halloween Candy Drive - WOW
A huge thank you to all of the Strandwood families that donated to our candy drive.  We collected 426 pounds of sweet treats - now that's a lot of candy!!!!  All candy will be donated to the Blue Star Moms who will be putting together care packages to send to our troops overseas.

On behalf of Girl Scout Troop 30054 (3rd Grade Brownies), thank you for making our Fall service project such a sweet success!

School Closure Committee
Tonight's School Closure Committee meeting will be the first time
any sort of priority lists will be discussed.

The committee was broken down to 7 sub-committees; Facility Condition, Capacity Utilization, Operations and Maintenance Costs, Adjacent Facility Capacity, Academic Performance, Geographic Equity and Improved Facility Conditions for Students.  Tonight, those committees will present their findings. These lists will be the basis for forming the school closure recommendations presented to the board in the near future (January?)

Tonight's meeting is from 5:30 to 8:00 P.M., at Willow Creek Center, 1026 Mohr Lane, Concord. The first 10 minutes of the meeting is open for public input.

Buy a Bag of Food
CAFB Logo Help spread a little holiday  cheer by donating $1, $5, or $10 to the Contra Costa Food Bank. For every $1 we raise, the food bank is able to purchase about $6 worth of food. Student Council wil be collecting donations in the PTA room before and after school Nov-19th. We will accept checks made out to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. If you have any questions please talk to Miss. G in B-5!
First Parent Education Night
The first PTA Parent Education Night was held last week and attendance was great. Although the speaker started with topics on keeping your child safe, he did move on to bullying and child self esteem. While these were not the promoted topics they were nevertheless important. Unfortunately, the speaker didn't have any handouts for those parents that were not able to attend the meeting.

The next Parent Education Meeting will be on bullying. Accurate information on the speaker and meeting will be coming to a Roadrunner or Email Blast soon.
FAME for November
FAME 3 Week 2 ART: The Marriage of Giocanni Arnolfini and His Bride
by Jan van Eyck   (Click any underlined title to learn more)

MUSIC: Minuet in G and Toccata & Fugue by
Johann Sebastian Bach  (click on the song title to listen)

Both of these artists lived a very long time ago, so students learn about some firsts in this lesson. They learn that Jan van Eyck was probably one of the first painters to use oil paint and compare its texture with that of other paints. They also spend some time looking at the symbols in van Eyck's painting and talk about how artists communicate through their paintings. They discover that Bach did not write for the piano (because it wasn't invented yet) and how to identify a fugue, one of Bach's favorite musical forms.
Read and Dream off to Another Successful Year
The Read and Dream Team is off to a great start this year. Mrs. Culbertson's class has already reached 100% participation, WOW. Only one student short of 100% are the classrooms of Mrs. Hoffman, Mrs. Terapore and Mrs. Schuster. 4 classes are only 2 student short of 100%. Great job Strandwood readers. Keep up the great work.
After School Spanish Classes - Sign Up Now
Beginning in January, 2011, Strandwood will once again offer an after school Spanish class. Spanish for Kids runs from January 4th - March 31st. Registration deadline is December 15th, 2010. Free Flu Vaccination Clinics
Contra Costa Health Services will hold a free one-day, flu vaccination event in nine Contra Costa cities next month.

The Public Health Division of Contra Costa Health Services plans to hold the free flu clinics from 1:00 to 7:00pm on Wednesday, November 10 to "Vaccinate Contra Costa." Only one vaccine is needed this year to protect against H1N1 and two other flu strains expected to be circulating this year, said Contra Costa Health Services Immunization Coordinator Erika Jenssen. People need this vaccine even if they received seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccine last year, and some children will need two doses, she said.

Clinics in our area will be held in Concord (5298 Clayton Road), Martinez (30 Muir Road), Lafayette (952 Moraga Road), and Pittsburg (200 Marina Boulevard).
Flu vaccine is also available from health care providers, local pharmacies, grocery stores, and community clinics. A podcast and video answering commonly asked flu questions is available on the CCHS Web site: cchealth.org/topics/flu/.

To find a clinic near you, visit cchealth.org/topics/flu/vaccination.php or call the CCHS Health Emergency Information Line at 1-888-959-9911 for information.
