Red Ribbon Week
This is the time we remember police officers whose lives have been lost in the fight against illegal drugs. Red Ribbon Week started with the family of Agent Enrique Camerena, tortured and killed by drug dealers, who wanted others to know the loss they sustained when Enrique died doing his job.Personal choices can affect others around us and society in general. We want the next generation to make good choices.

This weeks activities at school are:
Monday, October 25 - "You Gotta Have Heart" (Wear red to school)
Tuesday, October 26 - "Don't Let Drugs Sneak Up On You" (Wear sneakers to school)
Wednesday, October 27 - "Living Drug Free Is No Sweat" (Wear sweats to school)
Bring an especially healthy snack.
Thursday, October 28 - "Hugs, Not Drugs" (Bring your favorite stuffed animal to school)
Friday, October 29 - "Say Boo To Drugs"
Student Council

Our 4th and 5th grade classrooms have elected Student Council Representatives!

We are so excited to announce the beginning of a Student Council program at Strandwood. It is a great opportunity for upper grade students to become more involved in the decision making process that occurs on campus, as well as engage in community service projects and gain experience in a leadership skills.

Each 4th and 5th grade classroom provided the opportunity for students to give a speech in front of their class. Ballots were cast by each class and votes counted. The coucil will meet after school each week on Wednesdays from 12:30 - 1:00. They will work together to decide upon and plan events for students.

A-3 Katelyn D. and Ben L.   Alternate is Jessica B.

The Student Directory is Here
The 2010-2011 Student Directory has been distributed. There are some new pages this year and we hope you like the changes. Thank you again to our advertisers. If you have any ideas for future directories please let us know at strandwood_emailclub@hotmail.com.

This year we will distribute an update list for those people that want to be in the directory but were left off for some reason. Email your information to strandwood_emailclub@hotmail.com by November 12th to be included in the update.

It is much easier to package and distribute one directory to each student so many families have multiple copies. You may return any unneeded copies to the office.

Halloween Candy Drive - Nov 1st - 5th
Not sure what to do with all of the Halloween candy your kids collect?  Spare yourself the calories and late night snacking this year by donating your sweet treats to the Halloween Candy Drive.

Third grade Brownie Troop 30054 will be collecting candy after school in the PTA Room, Monday November 1st - Friday, November 5th. All candy will be given to the Blue Star Moms who will then package the candy in holiday care packages for our soldiers stationed overseas.

A collection box will also be located in the office.
Target Red Card
Do you have a Target Red Card yet?  Now the Target Red Card saves you 5% on every Target shopping trip, every day! Apply and get approved for a TARGET credit card (it only takes 5 minutes at the check-out).  Enroll in Take Charge For Education and designate Strandwood as your school.

Start shopping and using your card.  Target will track purchases and send a donation check to the school.  Currently, we have only 27 families participating in the program but we received a check in August 2010 for almost $600!!!! This is the easiest money we've ever made - passive fundraising at its best!!

For more information, go to the Strandwood PTA website and click on the TARGET icon or click here.

Safeway Annual Renewal Time!
eScrip is an important part of our fund-raising program and we need your help.  If you have signed up your Safeway Club card in the eScrip program, you must renew it by November 1 to ensure that your Club card contributions go uninterrupted all year long.  This is quick and simple.

You can renew online by going to: http://www.escrip.com/ and clicking on the Check Mark to renew or look for the paper form coming home from school in the next week.  Fill this out and return to the eScrip box in the office and we will take care of the renewal for you.
PTA Donations via PayPal
Have any relatives or friends that would like to contribute to the Strandwood PTA? The PTA website now has an "open donation" button that will accept any amount. Visit Strandwood.org and look in the lower right corner of the homepage or click here. This suggestion was brought up at a recent PTA meeting. If you have any other suggestions for the PTA website please let us know at strandwoodweb1@yahoo.com.

Fifth Annual Day at the Races for Literacy, Budget and Solar updates.

"Budget Update:
Although the State budget restored the $275 per-student reduction from the Governor's May budget proposal, and we will receive $6 million in new one-time Federal dollars, we are being very cautious about the District's budget. In a Los Angeles Times article dated October 10, 2010, by Evan Halper, Mr. Halper asserts that come January, a new governor and a new crop of lawmakers will have to confront the $19 billion deficit that the current governor and legislature failed to address.

Quoting the Los Angeles Times:
The most optimistic projections show that the spending plan Schwarzenegger signed will produce a shortfall of at least $10 billion - more than 11% of state spending - in the next fiscal year. Many experts predict it will be billions more. The leaders mostly papered over this year's gap, punting many tough decisions forward.

We have read many analyses of the State budget that reach similar conclusions. A commensurate 11% reduction to California's education budget would be approximately $5.5 billion. This would translate into an additional $20 million reduction to our District budget!"

Read the remainder of the budget article and articles titled Fifth Annual Day at the Races for Literacy and Shining the Light on Solar by clicking here.

The district has been making good on the promise to keep everyone informed with these
twice monthly updates. I hope everyone is reading them.
An Interesting October Fact (oops, Myth)
"October, 2010, has something that occurs once every 823 years (or so I'm told). This month has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays. An extra weekend, wow. "

OK, I got one email questioning this "Interesting Fact" last week. Since this was one of the very few things I didn't fact check this year it stands to reason that this "fact" was incorrect. The next time we will have 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays in one month is....... July, 2011. Oops...
