Fall Fest 2010
Mark your calendars! Strandwood's Annual Fall Fest will be Friday, October 22nd from 5-8pm.  Start brainstorming with the kids to create a unique design for our pumpkin carving contest or begin planning a spook-tacular cake for our cake walk.  Volunteer to participate in our First Annual Pie Eating Contest.

Come hungry and buy dinner for the kids at the Taco Truck.  FREE carnival games, face painting and much more will be available for the entire family.  4th Grade Outdoor Ed will be selling Bumble Bean Coffee and the Book Fair will be open in the library, so plan to do a little shopping too.  We have a fun event planned and hope you can make it.

What can you do to help?  Donate a cake or cupcakes to the cake walk and bake sale.  Contact Kelly Gallagher (kelgallagher@gmail.com) if you can assist with set-up, clean-up or working a station.

Watch next week's Communication Folders for more information about the cake walk, pumpkin contest and pie-eating contest.  Feel free to come in costume.

Record Number for Principal Auditions!
Auditions for principal parts (Nutcracker, Rat King, Mama Mouse and Drosselmeyer) were held last Wednesday. We had a record number of 5th graders audition - over 30! What a talented group! Congratulations to everyone who tried out for a part.

Thank YOU volunteers!
In wonderul Strandwood style, we had a few volunteers step up to help take over the Nutcracker after this year when the core committee members retire. We can always use more help as there are still several key roles that need to be filled. Please contact Diane Kastell (dikastell@yahoo.com or 686-4943) or May Hanecak (may_hanecak417@yahoo.com or 934-6828) if you are interested in helping out.
PTA Reflections Program Returns to Strandwood
The PTA Reflections Program is designed to enhance a quality arts education by providing an opportunity for students to explore their artistic talents and receive positive recognition for their efforts. When children express themselves through words, pictures, music, dance, and other art forms, they grow intellectually and socially. They learn to analyze their thoughts, feelings, and ideas; learn to look at things, people, and experiences in a fresh and exciting way; and become more interested in the ideas and works of others.

Each year, the PTA Reflections Program challenges students to create art inspired by a specific theme. Themes are selected from hundreds of ideas submitted by students to the PTA Reflections Program Theme Search. Past themes have included "Exploring New Beginnings," "If I Could Give the World a Gift...," "A Different Kind of Hero," and most recently, "I Can Make a Difference by..." and "Wow!" The 2010-2011 theme is "Together we can..."

Students participate in the Reflections Program by submitting entries to a local PTA or PTSA. Nationally, the program has six arts areas-dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts."

Students can pick up an entry form and rules in the office from October 4th through November the 4th.  All entries are due on November the 5th.

Parents - If you have an interest in the arts and would are willing to participate as a judge, please e-mail Elizabeth Swanson @ elizabeth.swanson46@yahoo.com .
