Race To Nowhere | A concerned mother turned filmmaker aims her camera at the culture of hollow achievement and pressure to perform that has invaded America's schools. It is destroying our children's love of learning and feeding an epidemic of unprepared, disengaged, and unhealthy students. This remarkable new film shines a light on the price our kids pay for this "race to nowhere."
Cheating is commonplace, stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and ironically, young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired. Featuring the heartbreaking stories of young people who have been pushed to the brink and educators who are burned out and worried that students aren't developing the skills needed for the global economy, RACE TO NOWHERE points to the silent epidemic running rampant in our schools.
RACE TO NOWHERE is a call to families, educators, experts and policy makers to examine current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become the healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens in the 21st century. View the film trailer by clicking here.

4th Grade Parents - Fundraising Volunteers Needed | It has become the custom to start fundraising for the 5th grade Outdoor Education Program while still in 4th grade. This provides many more opportunities to raise funds to reduce the cost of this great program. This year, Outdoor Ed will be in January. If we didn't do fundraising last year it would be very difficult to raise much money before the event. If you are interested in becoming part of the committee please contact the PTA Executive VP, Lea Harrington for more information.

The PTA Reflections Program Returns to Strandwood
|
The PTA Reflections Program is designed to enhance a quality arts education by providing an opportunity for students to explore their artistic talents and receive positive recognition for their efforts.
When children express themselves through words, pictures, music, dance, and other art forms, they grow intellectually and socially. They learn to analyze their thoughts, feelings, and ideas; learn to look at things, people, and experiences in a fresh and exciting way; and become more interested in the ideas and works of others.
Each year, the PTA Reflections Program challenges students to create art inspired by a specific theme. Themes are selected from hundreds of ideas submitted by students to the PTA Reflections Program Theme Search. Past themes have included "Exploring New Beginnings," "If I Could Give the World a Gift...," "A Different Kind of Hero," and most recently, "I Can Make a Difference by..." and "Wow!" The 2010-2011 theme is "Together we can..."
Students participate in the Reflections Program by submitting entries to a local PTA or PTSA. Nationally, the program has six arts areas-dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts.
Students can pick up an entry form and rules in the office from October 4th through November the 4th. All entries are due on November the 5th.
Parents - If you have an interest in the arts and would are willing to participate as a judge, please e-mail Elizabeth Swanson @ elizabeth.swanson46@yahoo.com
