A Word From Mrs. Kim, Our Principal

Opportunity Knocks!

Mrs. Kim The nominations for Parents/Community members for Strandwood's Schoolsite Council closed on Friday. We only received one nomination! We need three new parent/community members.

Schoolsite Council is an excellent opportunity to be involved in the governance of our school. This year in addition to approval of our Single Plan for Student Achievement and School Safety plan, the Site Council will have input into the formation of our school homework policy. Participation on the Schoolsite Council provides parents/community members opportunities to talk with staff about curriculum, professional development, our district policies and procedures. Parents/community members are provided a training by our school district on the Education Laws that Schoolsite Councils are governed by as well as the purpose, procedures and responsibilities of members.

We meet once a month on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 3:15 in the school library. Please consider this opportunity and nominate yourself or someone else you feel would be a valuable member of our Schoolsite Council.

Please submit nominations to the school office by Friday, Sept. 10th. It is a great way to be involved!

Click here for the nomination form. return it to the office by Friday.

First PTA Meeting of the Year is Thursday Night
One More Babysitter wanted $$
The first PTA General Membership Meeting of the year will be held in the library on Thursday, September 9th from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. The annual budget will be presented and the membership will vote to accept or change it. If you are interested in how your PTA money is going to be spent then you should attend. If you just can't make it, the minutes will be posted on our website the following week.

Babysitting is provided at no charge during the PTA meetings. Our regular babysitters have moved on and we are looking for two or more parents that would like to take over this important duty. Babysitters are paid $40 per night, each. We could use one more babysitter.

Safeway's 10% Goes Back to Schools
By Katherine Bracken
Let's kick off the year with an easy and fun fundraiser! Between August 11 and September 14, Strandwood can earn 10% of purchases when families buy participating products at Safeway stores. Look for the Yellow School Bus Tags on over 2,000 products and make sure you use your Club Card when purchasing them. If you are already registered with eScrip, your contribution goes to Strandwood automatically.

From September 18 through October 9, those that have not registered their Safeway Club Cards with eScrip will get a receipt with a redemption code on it. Drop that receipt into the 10% Goes Back to School box in the office and Strandwood will get the donation.

Want to have even more fun and earn more money for Strandwood? Collect receipts with redemption codes on them from friends and family.  Put your name and child's classroom on the back of the receipt and we will have a prize for the family who turns in the most receipts.
Race to Nowhere
A special Screening at Strandwood Elementary
By Cindy Turner
A concerned mother turned filmmaker aims her camera at the culture of hollow achievement and pressure to perform that has invaded America's schools. It is destroying our children's love of learning and feeding an epidemic of unprepared, disengaged, and unhealthy students. This remarkable new film shines a light on the price our kids pay for this "race to nowhere."

Cheating is commonplace, stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and ironically, young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired. Featuring the heartbreaking stories of young people who have been pushed to the brink and educators who are burned out and worried that students aren't developing the skills needed for the global economy, RACE TO NOWHERE points to the silent epidemic running rampant in our schools.

RACE TO NOWHERE is a call to families, educators, experts and policy makers to examine
current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become the healthy, bright,
contributing and leading citizens in the 21st century. View the film trailer by clicking here.

Important Volunteer Information
Now that the Back to School Nights have concluded I'm sure there are a few of you out there that have stepped up to help but haven't met the requirements of the district.

Anyone working with students must be fingerprinted by the Mt. Diablo School District and have a negative TB test on file. How do you do that? Click here to download the Parent Volunteer Fingerprint Form. Evidence of a negative tuberculosis test done within the last 60 days must be provided to the Personnel Office at the time of your scheduled fingerprint appointment. TB clearance remains valid for 4 years and fingerprints remain valid for the duration of your volunteering within the school district. The TB test spans 2 or 3 days so don't leave it to the day before your fingerprinting date.

Your family doctor can usually administer the TB test or there are two Muir Diablo Occupational labs that can perform the tests.

Concord: 2231 Galaxy Court 685-7744
Test available everyday Mon - Fri from 7 AM-7 PM, Sat 9 AM-2 PM
No TB after 2 PM on Thursdays

Walnut Creek: 1981 N. Broadway, Suite 190 932-7715
Test available everyday Mon - Fri, from 8 AM-5PM

Volunteer Drivers: If you plan on driving students on field trips you must have a copy of your current automobile insurance coverage on file in the office. This is in addition to the fingerprinting and TB testing requirements. The proof of insurance coverage must be a copy of the policy showing how much coverage you have. A proof of insurance card that you keep in the car is not sufficient.
