Jump Start Day
Jump Start Day (JSD) is two weeks away, August 23rd, and the preparations are in full swing. Papa Murphys Pizza will once again be there to provide hot pizza on-site. Last year this was so popular that we were overwhelmed with orders. This year we will be better prepared to provide you with a great dining option. More information is provided below.

This year we have placed all forms, including the emergency forms, on line. Using the online forms is very simple. Open the packet, fill in the forms, print and bring them to JSD on the 23rd. Click here to open the electronic packet.

If you don't have access to a computer or just feel like filling out forms manually there will be a limited amount of printed packets available outside the school office weekdays from Wednesday, August 11th through Friday, August 20th between the hours of 9:00 am and 2:30 pm. The packets will be generic and won't have students names on them. If you have more that one student please pick up extra emergency and disaster forms.

The feedback already on the electronic forms has been very positive and we sincerely hope you elect to use them. If you have any questions regarding JSD or the electronic or printed packets please contact Jeff Eide at JEideVP@gmail.com or strandwood_emailclub@ hotmail.com.

We look forward to seeing everyone on Monday, August 23rd.

Complete class assignments will be posted on the bulletin board Tuesday morning, August 24th.

JSD volunteers are still needed.
Contact Jeff Eide if you can help out on the 23rd.

MDUSD Board of Education Meeting
The MDUSD Board will meet on Tuesday night to discuss many items. Among them will be the approval of an additional reading and instructional assistant for Strandwood. These additional positions will bring the total reading assistants to 2 and instructional assistants to 7 for the 2010-2011 school year. These positions are paid for by the PTA. (item 9.10 and 9.11)

Another item will be the approval of the Citizens Oversight Committee for the Measure C Bond expenditures (item 14.7). Among the 17 applicants is Strandwood's own, Sue Noack (and past Strandwood PTA President and now PHMS parent, Jenny Reik). For a complete list of the applicants that will oversee the $348 million bond click here. The link will take you to the MDUSD Parents Blog which had the list in an easier format to read.

Also in this meeting, the Board will consider a resolution authorizing the first issuance of bonds under the June 8, 2010 bond election (item 14.8). If you really want to know more about the actual bond issuance you will want to read the 175 page document!!

The Latest District News
If you follow the news and/or local blogs regarding our school district one of the common complaints is the lack of communication from the board of education and the district superintendent. Two members of the board, Gary Eberhart and Paul Strange have communicated through their blog, http://mdusd.blogspot.com/ but the district has been pretty quite in the last year or so. With the article below it appears that the Superintendent, Steven Lawrence, is working on correcting that and he has promised to communicate twice monthly through an email newsletter. Be sure to click on the link and read the entire newsletter. In the future, the Roadrunner will publish a link to the newsletters when they are available. We will also continue to bring you information regarding district, school, PTA and community news throughout the 2010-2011 school year.
Mt. Diablo USD News Update
Where Kids Come First
As the summer months turn toward a new school year, we are pleased to share with you the accomplishments that have been achieved in the Mt. Diablo USD.  During the past couple of months, we have been quite busy working to further strengthen educational programs for all students in the District.

Shared Vision/Common Goals
To begin, we are initiating an effort to improve District communication with our parent community.  Twice monthly we will publish an e-newsletter to provide updates on District and school activities and events.  Additionally, Board of Education and other District meetings' agenda items will be shared.  The e-newsletter will also be posted on our web page, and a hard copy will be available at all school sites.

Summer Highlights
A new Student Achievement and School Support Department has been created.  The restructuring of the former Curriculum and Instruction Department allowed us to bring in several of our successful elementary and secondary principals, who will be responsible for working directly with and supporting our school sites.  This restructuring both maximizes talent and generated over $50,000 in savings.

This new administrative team will bring increased focus to student achievement, which is the District's first and foremost goal.

Additionally, we have new principal assignments in place effective this fall.  A list of newly appointed principals and their assignments is included at the end of this e-newsletter.

A Community's Vote of Support for Its Public Schools
Building 21st Century Schools to Deliver 21st Century Education

Measure C
Once again, our community stepped up and offered its support for public education through the successful passage of a facilities bond campaign.

This is a tremendous compliment and vote of confidence in our District and the work being done by hundreds of dedicated education professionals and support personnel.

Foundation for Pleasant Hill Education
FPHE In May 2010, FPHE awarded more than $30,000 to support educational activities in Pleasant Hill public schools. The grants represent a significant investment of funds to enhance educational opportunities for Pleasant Hill students while our schools combat ongoing spending cuts. This year's grant awards are more than double what FPHE awarded in 2009. Over its two-year history the Foundation has awarded $45,000 to Pleasant Hill schools.

The $30,000 was raised from 291 private donations and the proceeds from special events including Dine Out for Education, Night of Improv, and the Oak Park
Restaurant Walk.

Those who did not have a chance to give during the annual campaign can give at
any time throughout the year (please visit www.fphe.org). FPHE donors help show
and enforce that our community values quality education.

Community Service Day
Save The Date - the Pleasant Hill Community Service Day will take place on Saturday, September 25th. For more information click here or visit www.pleasant-hill.net/csd.
