Read and Dream photoRead and Dream Awards
On Friday, like the first Friday of every month, the Read and Dream coordinators, Noga Kessler and Suzie Silva, awarded books to those students that met their grade level goal in February. Mrs. Kim announces the winners at lunch time and the students come up and grab a book of their choice. Here some of the 3rd graders choose a book from the selections set out on the stage. Each grade level has specific books to match the reading levels. What a great program Strandwood and the PTA have developed to encourage and reward reading.

This years Read and Dream Team now has 473 students, about 87% of all students! Teachers that have 100% of their students on the team are Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Tarapore and Mrs. Schuster. Close behind are the classes of Mrs. Perona, Mrs. Rowe, Mr. Brown and Mrs. Culbertson with all but 1 student on the team and Mrs. Beck, Mrs. McCaffrey and Mrs. Sinow's classes only need 3 or less students to make it 100%.

To date, the PTA has given out a total of 1,360 books to our Read and Dream Team students.
Great job Noga and Suzie and thank you for your hard work on this great program.

Parents, before turning in your reading logs you can log those minutes at a website for a chance to earn Strandwood $5,000 for our library. Check out the article below.

Plan Ahead, Slow Down and Be Courteous
an editorial
Speeding and Parking. These two things seem to pop up as hot topics around Strandwood Elementary occasionally. From people driving too fast on the surrounding streets to double parking in the parking lot and blocking driveways around the different entrances to school.

Speeding:The answer to most of our speeding problems is to plan ahead and leave enough time to comfortably get to school, or an appointment, on time. I was taught that you leave early enough to arrive at your destination at least 10 to 15 minutes prior to your appointment. I know that in this hustle and bustle world we live in that is difficult at times but it leaves a cushion needed when you seem to hit all the red lights or get behind the slowest driver in all of California. If I asked my dad (he is 91 now) to come over at 2:30pm to watch or visit the boys I sometimes caught him in his car at the end of the driveway at 2:20pm, waiting that 10 minutes before he came to the door (He was welcome earlier than 2:30pm). That might be a little overboard but he believed in being prompt. I guess 2:30pm meant 2:30pm, not 2:25pm in his days.
30 1st Graders
When you are running late you tend to drive faster and are not as careful as you normally would be. Maybe you will run that yellow/red light or not look for pedestrians when making that right turn from a stop sign (that you rolled through). Driving faster because you are late is putting yourself, and those students who walk or ride to school on our narrow roads, at risk. And with the "green" movement there are more children walking and riding bicycles to school than ever. I'm always amazed when I see cars flying into the parking lot dropping students off later than 8:10am. Arriving late to class is also disruptive and unfair to the other students whose parents planned ahead.

And when it rains the water seems to short circuit the logical part of everyone's brain. Traffic is going to be slower when it rains, and there will be more of it around school because many students are not walking or biking to school. Doesn't it make sense to leave earlier than normal?

So please, plan ahead, slow down and get there on time safely.

Want to break your habit of always being late (or punctually challenged).
Visit IAmAlwaysLate.org (no kidding) for all kinds of tips on being on time.

And here is a little advice from Dr. Phil :
"Examine your mental process.
If you know that it takes 45 minutes to get ready and arrive at a destination, ask yourself why you would spend 30 minutes doing something else and then try to get ready and get to your destination in 15 minutes. How do you justify the behavior? You're not late at 11:00. If you have to be somewhere at 11:00 and it takes 30 minutes to get there, you're late at 10:30 if you're still at home." For more advice on not being late or procrastination click here to read the remainder of the article.

Parking: Again a simple solution, courtesy. Whether it is on Eloise, Galdys or Monte Circle/Court don't block someone's driveway, even "for only a minute". I know they bought the house knowing that there was an entrance to the school nearby but they are not complaining about the school, only parents blocking their driveways. Think back to the last paragraph and imagine you didn't leave that cushion to get to your job interview on time. You come out and someone is blocking your driveway and is nowhere to be found. Now you are 5 or 10 minutes late. You will be upset at that inconsiderate driver and then there's a good possibility you will speeding to make your appointment on time. That's a good recipe for an accident, ask any police officer. If you get stopped by the police you will be even later to your appointment. If you get in an accident you might never make it.

The double parking during pick-up times is sometimes unavoidable. If you do double park, please have the common courtesy to stay with your vehicle. If you want to get out and chat with the other parents, arrive early and get a parking spot. There are always spots on Monte or Eloise in addition to the parking lot. A note to those Kindergarten parents, Monte Cirlce/Court is a great place to park. I have also heard of vehicles double parked, unattended, in the middle of the roadway, preventing anyone from passing! That's not cool.  So when you are parking at school, not in the red zone of course, please think of your fellow drivers.

To those that have written me with your concerns I hope this covers your topics. To everyone else, thanks for listening.
