A Message From The Principal
|
If you can read this, thank a teacher.....
"If you can read this, thank a teacher" was a bumper sticker that was circulating around the car bumper scene in the late 80s and early 90s when California was going through another budget crisis. Teaching jobs were few and far between, class sizes were going up and salaries were low.
As we go through another budget crisis in California and education is undergoing reductions and program cuts, we are fortunate at Strandwood to have a generous and hard working parent community. Our PTA funds six instructional assistant positions to help the first and second grade teachers implement reading approaches which have proven to help struggling readers to succeed.
We welcome: Evelyn Barrera in B-4 Monica Medina Campos in B-3 Rosaisela Rodriguez in B-2 Gail Vasgerdsian in B-9 Roxanne Gambill in B-8
Each of these people brings unique qualities to the classrooms. As I walk around the classrooms I see them working with students in small groups or one to one. They are using highly engaging instructional strategies to instruct students in phonics, sight words and anything the classroom teacher has identified as a need through assessment.
The sixth position has just been opened to the public and in the next two weeks Lisa Keck and I will be interviewing and selecting an instructional assistant for her classroom. In true Strandwood collaboration, the primary teachers have been "sharing" their instructional assistants with B-5 which has given that classroom support four days a week as well.
At the end of this school year, we will be able to use classroom assessments and other tools to measure if this support has provided the targeted intensive prevention which was our goal. If the smiles on the faces of the students in the classroom when they are engaged in learning activities with these great assistants are evidence of the success, I'm confident we will have proficient readers at every grade level!
Thank you Strandwood community for trusting us and supporting our vision. |

Match Found For Natalie !
|
A word from the "Hope For Natalie" website. "We have great
news that a match has been found for Natalie's transplant! Thank you so
much to all of you who have worked so hard for her drives, prayed for
us, spent your free time emailing your network of friends to come to
the drives, ordered kits to swab your friends, sent in kits, tested,
and supported us through the search.
We heard that Natalie's hometown drive at Gregory Gardens was
wonderful and 700 people came from all over the bay area (some from
Sacramento)to get tested and registered. Gregory Gardens families and
staff, you are all truly amazing people. Thank you so much for pulling
the community together and putting so much heart into helping us and so
many people in our situation. We know some of you got there at 7am and
didn't leave until 6:00 pm that day.
The Cal drive also went well too. Our friends and volunteers got 200
people tested and registered. We heard that some people actually
thought they were donating their marrow that same day and were ready to
do that. Wow.
Thank you to everyone who organized and helped with all the other
drives as well. If we haven't mentioned specific information from those
drives, it's just because we haven't heard the stories yet from those
drives. We are sure there are special stories there too. We feel so
lucky to have so many people support and carry us through this hard
time. We honestly would not be able to do any of this without you all." To read the rest of the Natalie Nakatani story click here. To read the Contra Costs Time story that ran yesterday click here.
Special thanks and congratulations to our own Strandwood mom, Maritza Ruiz Kim who was the Lead Volunteer for the drive. Great job Maritza!

with Special Needs and 504 Plans |
The Mt. Diablo School District hired MGT of America, a consultant firm, to perform a study of their Special Education Services/Programs. The report has been received and recommendations include the complete dismantling of the Special Education/Student Services Department. Instead, there would be:
* One Director. * Three Program Specialists to train site staff. * ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) to be handled by the district legal counsel.
In addition to the increased responsibilities they have acquired due to
staff reductions, Principals would now be responsible for special
education/504 student services/programs.

Are you ready to swap? Book collections begin Monday, February 22rd to Friday, February 26th.
The Strandwood Upper Grade Book Swap is for grades 3-5.

All upper grade students participate. Each student is given a ticket for one book to pick out at the swap automatically. Additional tickets are received for each book the student brings in to "trade". Up to a maximum of 12 tickets. Tickets will be used for Book Swap only.
Here's how it works: Bring in your used books to your teacher and receive a ticket for each book collected.

Music Foundation Needs Volunteers
|
Mt. Diablo Music Education Foundation is in the midst of launching a fund-raising campaign that has great potential to raise the funds to reinstate 5th grade music for the 2011-2012 school year BUT we need help. I am looking for a school level rep to work with the Foundation in facilitating the successful implementation of our "Draw For Disney" an opportunity to make a contribution to the Foundation and in return get an opportunity to win a Disney vacation.
We would like to plan a strategy specific to Strandwood during the month of March and implement the donation process in the month of April. We are looking for individuals from Strandwood who could assist with this. I will update them on our plans and the role of Strandwood in our campaign. Without the participation of each school we will not meet the goals of this campaign and our kids will be the ones, as well as those teachers without positions, who loose out.
I appreciate your efforts in assisting with this request for help, I can not do this without you and our parents. Please feel free to call me at 925 381 8943 with questions about the program or leads. You can also share my information with any parent who is interested. THANK YOU!!
