Memorial Day Date Correction
The date of the Memorial Day holiday is incorrect on your student communication folder. The correct date of the holiday is May 31st, not May 24th as printed.
Get Involved with Your Child's School
Overwhelming evidence suggests that students' success stems in part from their parents' involvement in their school. Heather Weiss, director of the Harvard Family Research Project says, "There is a responsibility on the part of the parents to be proactive and to look for opportunities to connect with the teachers and school."

Research shows that when parents and teachers are in touch, children are more likely to do well in school. And when parents are heavily involved with schools, children's academic performance vastly improves.

Find ways to become comfortable in your children's school and build lines of communication with teachers and administrators. Think about how you can involve yourself in the academic community. Even working parents and parents with little spare time should get involved. Here are some ways to get involved with your child's school:

►Join the PTA or a parent advisory board. Participate in shaping program policy so that you have a say in how your children are affected, and you can help guide academic programs in a beneficial way.

►Volunteer. Contact your children's teachers and ask if you can help out during class time by passing out snacks or assisting with experiments and presentations.

►Chat with the teachers. When you drop your children off or pick them up, say hello to the teachers and talk for a few minutes.

►Help at home. Stay aware of your children's assignments and knowledgeable about what they are learning.

►Support the school or academic program. Get involved in fund-raisers and bake sales.

►Stay in touch with the parents of your child's classmates. Create a network of parents, so that you all are kept apprised of what is happening in the classroom.

FPHE Annual Campaign

Preschool for March: $250
Soccer sign-ups: $90
Monthly latte purchases: $70
Donation to FPHE: $55
Your child's education: priceless

Help our schools thrive - give $55

30 1st GradersStatus of Campaign
As of February 15, the Foundation for Pleasant Hill Education (FPHE) has received approximately
$15,500 in donations toward our 2010 goal of $55,000. That amount comes from 158 donors or only 16 % of our registered supporters. Alone, a $55 donation does very little, but if all our supporters gave $55 or more we would exceed our goal. There is strength in numbers. All of us, giving together, can make a tremendous impact on our children's education.

If you have already donated we thank you for your generosity and for understanding the immediate need of supporting and enhancing local education.

The Hard Facts
School budgets in our district were slashed $30 million this year, with $34 million more projected over the next three years. From the federal government, to the state, and to our school district, the fiscal environment is extremely tenuous. At our local level, principals are now asking parent-teacher organizations to help with basic purchases and curriculum needs, items that were once provided by the district. In order to ensure that strong schools stay strong, we must provide educational enrichments ourselves. Public education is free, but quality is not.

Time to Act
It is time for us, as a community, to come together for the benefit of our local schools and our children's education. It is time for us to protect academics and our children from budget cuts and program reductions. A donation to FPHE makes our schools better now and improves the future of Pleasant Hill education.

FPHE Funds in Action
In our first year (2009), FPHE awarded $14,000 in grants for books and reference materials, math programs such as Board Math, media and library equipment, hands-on history and science lessons, educational software, and high school periodicals. Our grants, directly funded by your donations, provide both the basics and enhancements to existing curriculum. FPHE can enhance the entire educational spectrum from kindergarten to 12th grade with your help. We recognize the importance of supporting your child's own school, but we must focus on strengthening the entire College Park High School feeder pattern.

Be a Part of Progress
Be a part of FPHE's success and make a difference. Place the priority of education at the top of your list and make a donation of $55 or more today at www.fphe.org.
