A Message From The Principal
Mean Spirited, Name calling, Pushing, Hitting, Extortion, Exclusion, Rumor spreading,  all a form of bullying.....
30 1st Graders
Today on a daily basis the subject of bullying comes up. We hear or read about incidents of bullying at the national level and local level. We hear, read or even see incidents of adult to adult bullying, student to student bullying and even adult to child bullying! Technology has become a vehicle for bullying!

In the Healthy Kid Survey taken by last year's 5th grade class at Strandwood (results available on line in our school's Single Plan for Student Achievement starting on page 72), 54% of our students reported that they feel safe at school all of the time, 37% most of the time. 62% of those students responding have never been hit or pushed by another student, 54 % have never had mean rumors spread about them. 79% have never pushed or hit other students, 69% have never spread mean rumors about other students. We are still responsible for supporting the 9% of students who don't feel safe at school all the time. How do we do that at Strandwood?

At Strandwood our teachers teach the life skills throughout the day:
· Blue Slip program emphasizes the Life Skills
· Teachers will teach specific Life Skill lessons - recently a 4th grade teacher played a game during PE that focused on the life skill of Cooperation
· Teachers use specific Life Skills language when responding to behavior problems
· Students are expected to reflect on the Life Skills when their own choices lead to a problem
· Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible is posted in the MU
· Our positive behavior expectations are posted in classrooms
· Teachers have clear expectations for classroom rules
· We have playground rules and expectations

A program developed at the University of Oregon called Steps to Respect has developed clear language for students and adults when it comes to defining bullying. Bullying is:
· Unfair and one sided
· It happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening or leaving someone out on purpose.

To help students recognize bullying they can ask themselves:
· Is it fair?
· Is it one sided?
· Is someone using power in a harmful way?
· How does it feel?
If they are still not sure, ask an adult.

February is Random Acts of Kindness month - research shows bullies are usually victims of bullying themselves, catching them being "good" just may turn them around.

Outdoor Ed Fundraising
Thank you so much for supporting Outdoor Education Fundraising.  The Maverick's Drive-Thru Dinner Night in January brought in $200 and the Pasta Pomodoro Dining Night last week raised over $260!

Our next Dining Out Night will be Thursday, February 18th at Sweet Tomatoes and Mavericks will once again host a Drive-thru Dinner Night on March 12th.  Flyers will be sent home and available online.  Due to the popularity of the Holiday See's Sale, we will be offering a second See's Candy Sale, March 8-16th - just in time for Spring.

For those of you who may not know:  Outdoor Education is a 5th Grade "rite of passage" at Strandwood that takes place for one week in November.  All fifth graders attend the week-long session with their teachers.  The Outdoor Education program is operated by Exploring New Horizons Outdoor School; a non-profit organization committed to providing high quality, affordable, environmental education to children.  Sempervirens Outdoor School is located in the Santa Cruz mountains near Big Basin Redwoods State Park.  Fundraising in fourth grade allows us to lower the overall cost for each family.

For more information on the Outdoor Education program visit the Strandwood Outdoor Education page on the website. Click on the Sempervirens link at the top right side of the page for information on the camp itself.
