Happy Memorial Day
Memorial Day Photo Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (on May 25 in 2009). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the civil war), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action. For more on Memorial Day visit Wikipedia or usa.gov.

Outstanding Bike to School Day!
Congratulations Strandwood on an amazing Bike To School Day last Friday!! We had over 130 students ride their bikes to school, and succeeded in almost doubling the amount of participation from October's Bike to School Day. Due to the enormous turnout, we ran out of Strandwood water bottles and snacks. We apologize to those who did not get them.  Next year we hope to continue the success of Bike to School Days and will be sure to provide snacks and water bottles for all who ride.

Book Fair Accolades

Lights, Camera, Book Fair!  We couldn't let the rest of the school year go by without saying thank you to all of the Strandwood families who helped make our Spring Book Fair such a huge success.

Thanks to you, we earned over $2,400 in book credits to add to our already impressive library.  And to all of our volunteers-- from the boy scouts scooping ice cream, the Dads who moved a lot of boxes for us, set-up, sales & take-down helpers-THANK YOU!

None of this would be possible without our incredible Strandwood parents.  Our deepest gratitude and appreciation goes to Beth Macy who has coordinated two book fairs a year for the last four years.  Beth and her son Ben will be heading off to Pleasant Hill Middle next year and we can only hope that they appreciate her energy and enthusiasm with their programs as much as we have.  Thank you Beth!  We'll miss you.

Last Week To Vote For PHMS Field Restoration

30 sites will have their fields renovated and as of last Friday, PHMS was not in the top 30. We need to keep voting every day, for this is half of the criteria that Kellogg's is looking at.

Let's get voting like we've never voted before!  The official rules state "The voting public will be allowed one (1) vote for their favorite finalist nomination per Day, per person/email address during the Voting Period." Vote with all your email addresses, every day.

Here are a few questions pulled from Kellogg's judging criteria to help you when thinking of leaving a comment:

  • How often is the field used?
  • What teams use the field?
  • Are there other athletic fields in the community?
  • What is the demand for the field?
  • What shape is the field in?
  • How would this field's makeover help the community?

We have until May 31 when they will choose the 30 fields to renovate.

Please, click here and vote every day this week or go to http://www.frostedflakes.com/#/plant-a-seed/
Save this email and use this link to vote every day.
From the District Superintendent
To Members of the Mt. Diablo School District Community,

I want to thank all of you who supported the effort to pass Measure D in the special election on May 19. When I reflect on the energy and enthusiasm I saw from the countless volunteers--parents, employees, students, and community members--who worked so hard throughout the unusually short three-month campaign, it's hard to believe that the measure was defeated.

While disappointed in the results, we achieved some successes in this endeavor that are well worth celebrating. Last January, when a group of employees and parents met to consider whether or not to pursue a parcel tax, most agreed that it would take nearly a year to carry out a successful campaign. When we learned in February that there would be a special election on May 19, we set aside our misgivings about the timeline and got to work.

In three months that collective endeavor resulted in $175,000 in campaign donations, hundreds of volunteers, and countless hours spent walking, talking, and sharing the message that our students needed the community's support. If this had been a bond measure, the 59% Yes vote would have given us a comfortable victory. The two-thirds vote requirement for a parcel tax put that victory just beyond our reach.

Nevertheless, we all can take heart at what was accomplished.

First and foremost, we demonstrated that we can come together as a district community for a common goal. Leaders and members of all the district's employee bargaining units worked side by side. Parents representing schools in every high school feeder pattern held meetings, sent out communications, organized activities, and carried signs. Local businesses and community members contributed money and time.

Working together, we nearly achieved in three months what we initially believed would take almost a year. I have every confidence that the next time the Mt. Diablo school district community embarks on a parcel tax campaign, the margin of victory will not even be close.

Now, however, my senior staff and I are undertaking the arduous task of adjusting the budget to accommodate reduced state and local funding, most a consequence of the election results. The federal stimulus money will provide some help, although much of it is directed to Special Education programs and high-poverty schools and all of it is one-time funding.

I will present the plan we develop in response to these budget changes to the Board of Education at its June 2, 2009, meeting.

Again, thanks for your involvement in the Measure D campaign and for all you have done and continue to do for the students in Mt. Diablo USD.

Sincerely,
Dick Nicoll
Interim Superintendent
Firecracker Fun Run Benefits Strandwood
The Pleasant Hill Fourth of July Commission has announced that the Firecracker 5K Fun Run will again be a part of this year's Fourth of July Celebration.  All proceeds from the run will be donated to Pleasant Hill schools!  Better yet, every runner who registers will receive a T-shirt and can designate what Pleasant Hill school they would like their registration fees to be donated to!  Last year, the Fourth of July Commission awarded Strandwood Elementary over $1,000. This is a great opportunity for parents and children, friends and neighbors to raise money for our school.

Fleet Feet Sports, the Rotary Club of Pleasant Hill, and Allied Waste are generously sponsoring this year's event which will begin at 8am and makes three laps of the parade route in downtown Pleasant Hill.  Same day registration and the start of the race will be in front of Fleet Feet Sports on Crescent Drive.

After May 30th on-line registration can be accessed by visiting the Fourth of July Commission's website at www.PHJuly4.com and click on the "5K Run" tab.  By registering on-line, individual runners and families will receive a break in registration fees from $5 to $15.

What a great way to kick off the Fourth of July and to help our school!
