Student Information Forms
|
|
Parents will have the opportunity to provide information
for consideration in the articulation process for the 2009-10 school year. A
Student Information Form will be available in the office for parents to
complete between today, May 18th, and Friday, May 29th. The forms must be
returned by May 29th. Additionally, Mrs. Kim is always happy to meet
individually with parents. Please call for an appointment.
This is an ideal opportunity to share with staff the

After School Chess Class Wraps Up
|
The after school chess program ended in style earlier this month. The Berkeley Chess School brought out their BIG chess set and all students, from 1st through 5th, alternated taking turns in a final fun chess match. A few of the chess class members participated in the East Bay Team Championships in April and placed 9th of 21 schools. Great Job. Thanks to our instructors, David Petty (1st Grade) and Armen Boyd (2nd -5th) for making this a fun learning experience. A big thank you also to Mr. Premo and Ms. Lefin for sharing their classrooms. If you are interested in chess, check out The Berkeley Chess School web site at www.berkeleychessschool.org. |

Chevron Provides Grant for Technology
|
Strandwood Kindergarten Teachers Strike Oil!
Our great Kindergarten team wrote and submitted a grant to Chevron
in April. The grant was to secure funding to bring technology into our
Kindergarten classrooms in the form of LCD projectors and document cameras.
Under the excellent writing skills of Karen Anderson (who was part of the
writing team for the California
Distinguished School
process), the team was successful in getting a grant for $4,915! Maybe LCD
projectors and document cameras are not quite the same as "black gold", but they
will add a richness to daily instruction in our Kindergarten classrooms next
year!

Speaking of Grants
|
Looking for a summer project that will benefit Strandwood? Well, have we got the job for you!!! The Grant Committee is looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to assist with the research and writing of school grants. No experience necessary - we're all new at this and it is a learning process for us all.
We need volunteers to get this up and running because there are many fantastic programs we want to both keep and bring to our school. There is grant money out there to be had, we just need people to help us find and apply for it. For more information, please contact Amanda Szakats at gszakats@yahoo.com or Cindy Turner at pcturner@sbcglobal.net.
If you are unable to help out during the school day this is a great way to stay involved and do your part to make Strandwood the outstanding school it it.

Pleasant Hill Middle School Field Renovation
|
|
30 sites will have their fields renovated and as of last last week, PHMS was 21st in voting. We need to keep voting every day, for this is only half of the
criteria that Kellogg's is looking at.
Let's get voting like we've never voted before!
On the website, it states that we can vote multiple times, but only once per
day. Here are a few questions pulled from Kellogg's judging criteria to
help you when thinking of leaving a comment:
- How often is the field
used?
- What teams use the field?
- Are there other athletic
fields in the community?
- What is the demand for the
field?
- What shape is the field
in?
- How would this field's
makeover help the community?
We have until May 31 when they will choose the 30 fields to renovate.

Firecracker Fun Run Benefits Strandwood
|
The Pleasant Hill Fourth of July Commission has announced that the Firecracker 5K Fun Run will again be a part of this year's Fourth of July Celebration. All proceeds from the run will be donated to Pleasant Hill schools! Better yet, every runner who registers will receive a T-shirt and can designate what Pleasant Hill school they would like their registration fees to be donated to! Last year, the Fourth of July Commission awarded Strandwood Elementary over $1,000. This is a great opportunity for parents and children, friends and neighbors to raise money for our school.
Fleet Feet Sports, the Rotary Club of Pleasant Hill, and Allied Waste are generously sponsoring this year's event which will begin at 8am and makes three laps of the parade route in downtown Pleasant Hill. Same day registration and the start of the race will be in front of Fleet Feet Sports on Crescent Drive.
After May 30th on-line registration can be accessed by visiting the Fourth of July Commission's website at www.PHJuly4.com and click on the "5K Run" tab. By registering on-line, individual runners and families will receive a break in registration fees from $5 to $15.
What a great way to kick off the Fourth of July and to help our school!
