 Nitro Swim School Newsletter

September 2011

Greetings!

We hope that getting back to school has been a smooth transition for everyone! We appreciate your cooperation and patience over the last couple weeks as we've all adjusted into the Fall schedule. If you're still waiting to get into a class, please be patient and keep checking with us -- we'll help you the best we can; class availability changes every day as kids advance, make schedule changes or withdrawal. Just a quick reminder: we're only able to register and make schedule changes up to two weeks out. If you'd like to take a look at the Fall schedule for our Cedar Park or Bee Cave location, please visit our website.

Swimmers of the Month

Isabella Famigiletti

Isabella Famiglietti (Bee Cave)

Isabella (4) started with Nitro at the beginning of July.  She was initially timid but still cooperative...until she reached station 4.  Being independent on her back was a big adjustment for Isabella and her anxiety turned into fear.  She would have crying breakdowns and would refuse to go on her back.  Then, all of the sudden, one day she got it! Now Isabella is making amazing progress.  She is on station 8 and comes to class every time with a smile on her face ready to play and learn.  She overcame all of her fear and shyness.  She is a very smart, witty girl and we are glad to have her here at Nitro! "Isabella is a great joy to have in class. I look forward to seeing her smiling face as she progresses through the program," Coach Anya said.

 Aidan Todd                      Hailee Seiser

Aidan Todd (Cedar Park)                                     Hailee Seiser (Cedar Park)

If anyone had seen Aidan's (5) first lesson at Nitro, back in March of 2010, they would understand why he is so deserving of this award. We were unable to get him to participate in a group atmosphere for his first few classes, but he was willing to get in at the stairs and spend time with Miss Tiffany. One magical day changed everything -- Coach Banana Head came up and did the high five, fall over - that would win anyone over - and they became instant friends. Aidan eventually learned to hold his breath, independently float, and the rest has been history. Just last week we had the pleasure of celebrating his graduation from Nitro 1. Looking back at all Aidan has overcome and achieved is remarkable -- his journey is an example of why we all truly love what we do.

Hailee (6) walked up to her first class in March of 2011 trying with everything she had to hold back eyes full of tears. Like most first-time swimmers, Hailee was apprehensive and not sure about this whole "swimming" thing.  Once she got into the water, she completely transformed. Her natural talent is apparent -- we just needed to find a way to get her confidence to match it.  After spending some time in the program, she began to trust the instructors and herself enough to realize that swimming could be fun. Nitro 1 graduation came as we expected, but watching her grow in Nitro 2 has been an amazing -- she only spent two classes learning side breathing! We love seeing her come to class with a smile on her face, and hope that she continues to love swimming all the way to Intro to Nitro!
Meet the Staff

                      Michael Prince                      Codie Brooks

Michael Prince (Bee Cave)                  Codie Brooks (Cedar Park)

Michael moved to Austin in January looking for work and we're happy that he's found a home here with us at Nitro.  He is as bright and new as the Bee Cave Facility.  Michael brings an energy and humor that make his lessons great and he adds an invaluable chemistry to our staff.  Michael served with the Army for four years, two of which he was stationed in Korea.  Upon returning he went to school to study Communications and is currently pursuing his degree at Austin Community College.

Codie joined the Cedar Park lessons team this past June, and has been a tremendous addition to our staff. She fit in immediately with her contagious smile and true passion for swimming. Codie's mom, who is also a former Aggie swimmer, taught her to swim when she was two years old -- while participating in Parent/Tot classes in Arlington, Teas. She decided to start swimming competitively when she was nine years old, after watching her older sister's first swim meet. Codie swam for the Dallas Mustangs and Lamar High School, before heading to Texas A&M. While at Texas A&M, Codie broke school records, achieved All-American times and qualified for NCAA's for four consecutive years. After completing undergrad with a degree in Nutrition, Codie earned her Master's this past May in Public Heath. She was recently married, and met her husband, Grant Brooks, at Aggie Swim Camp in 2006 where they both worked as camp counselors. "Swimming has always been a huge part of my life and I can't imagine what it would be like to not be around a pool," Codie said. "Teaching people to swim has been incredibly rewarding for me. I love sharing my passion for the sport with everyone I meet!"

Health Perks about Swimming for all ages!

Swimming isn't just an activity for young kids, it can also be a great way for adults to exercise as well! WebMD wrote a fantastic article about the benefits of swimming for all ages:
  1. Easy on the Body -- Swimming is a good whole-body exercise, that is also low impact. Water's buoyancy accommodates all body types by cushioning your joints: immersed to your waist, your body bears 50% of its weight; immersed to your chest, it's 25-35%; and to the neck is only 10%.
  2. Fitness Benefits -- Swimming includes all major muscle groups and because water affords 12 times the resistance as air in every direction, it helps build strength.
  3. Get Started! -- If you're a beginner, spend some time in a lessons environment or in private sessions with an instructor. If you know some basics, join a fitness group or a Master's program near you! It always helps to have the moral support of others.
