ISB member Bob Bowen died on August 30, 2010 from injuries sustained in a bicycling accident in New York City. He was 45 years old. Originally from Dayton Ohio, he performed with many noted musicians and co-led the "MOB Trio" with Matt Wilson and Ohad Talmor, "Slog", featuring Khabu Doug Young, Brian Drye, and Greg Joseph and "bowensacksweiss" with Jacob Sacks and Danny Weiss. Bob also led a large jazz ensemble called "Leeway" and was an active member of the Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble. He performed classical bass with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, the University of Dayton Faculty Chamber Ensemble and the Middletown Symphony Orchestra. He taught music theory and directed jazz combos at the Queens College Center for Preparatory Studies in Music program and the Manhattan School of Music Summer Jazz Workshop. Bob was a faculty member of the Miami Valley Summer Jazz Camp, an adjunct professor at Hofstra University, and was a founding member of the Manhattan-based Creative Music Workshop. Famed jazz photographer Herman Leonard, whose portraits of artists such as Ray Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and many other others, died August 14, 2010 at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. He was 87 years old. He studied photography at Ohio University in Athens, OH, graduating in 1947. He learned his craft under the world famous portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh, who urged his apprentice to strike out on his own. In 1948, he moved to New York and began documenting the jazz scene. Said Quincy Jones about Leonard's work, "When people think of jazz, their mental picture is likely one of Herman's." He released two books, "The Eye of Jazz" in 1985 and "Jazz Memories" in 1995. He moved to New Orleans in 1992. His home and studio were damaged in Hurricane Katrina and an archive of over 8,000 prints were lost in the flood. Fortunately, his negatives were stored elsewhere and escaped damage. He moved to Los Angeles and rebuilt his life and business there near family. He is survived by two sons, two daughters and six grandchildren. |
