NEWS OF NOTE
"Fiddlesticks!" is a 1927 silent film starring a double bassist, written and directed by Frank Capra that was presented with a new score by Maurice Saylor, performed live by the Snark Ensemble with Michael Cameron, double bass, on July 24, 2010 at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, East Building Concourse Auditorium.
"The Cool Jazz Set," hosted by ISB member Paul Pearce, will air a two-hour special honoring bassist, composer and bandleader John Clayton on Sunday, August 15th. The show will include music spanning four decades of John's recordings, from the Count Basie era to The Clayton Brothers and everything in between. Tom Martin celebrated his 70th birthday on July 22nd with family and friends at London's Henry Wood Hall. Some 150 people were in attendance, and Tom played, among other pieces, the original Gran Duo of Bottesini with Giuseppe Ettorre, and a Handel duet with his daughter Mary, who is following in her father's footsteps on the bass. Tom also received and played a new composition, Andante Pastoso For Tom Martin on his 70th Birthday, composed for and dedicated to him and inscribed "with love and respect," from John Patitucci. "The biggest present has been living for 70 years and playing the bass for 58 of them!" says Tom. "I've had a wonderful time and hopefully given something back." The rest of the summer he'll be performing in Sardinia, Poland (with Catalin Rotaru), Argentina and Chile.

David Gage String Instruments, the "Bass Mecca in Tri-Be-Ca," will host a Back-to-School Open House at their shop at 36 Walker St, New York, NY on September 25th from 2 to 6 PM. The free event will include educational sessions and a demo concert followed by a meet-and-greet reception. Chris Rohrecker from Connolly Music Co. will give a presentation on the science of bass strings, "What's New in Strings?" and David Gage will answer any questions from guests at his "Ask the Luthiers" session.Attendees will have a chance to win a $100 Starbucks gift card from Merz Huber Insurance, a set of bass strings or other bass products and services in a raffle. Music Rising, a campaign launched in 2005 to aid musicians after hurricanes Katrina and Rita, is moving to support Nashville and musicians affected by the recent devastating floods. ISB member Brian Powell is the new professor of double bass and string pedagogy at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music.
Scott Dixon joins the double bass faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Music beginning this fall. Scott joined the Cleveland Orchestra in 2007 after completing a master's degree at Rice University with Paul Ellison. In addition to his work in the orchestra, Mr. Dixon is active in early music and contemporary music, chamber music and solo performances. His training includes a three-year fellowship with the New World Symphony, four summers as a Fellowship student at the Aspen Music Festival, and a bachelor's degree from the Oberlin Conservatory with Scott Haigh.

The 4th World Bass Festival in Wroclaw, Poland, Irena Olkiewicz, director, will be held August 8-14, 2010.
