The winner of the inaugural Bradetich Foundation International Double Bass Solo Competition is Artem Chirkov from Russia, principal bass of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Artem will perform at the Berlin 2010 Bass Festival. Second prize went to Namgyun Kim from South Korea. The third prize winner was Rex Surany from the United State. An honorable mention went to Tian Yang Liu from China. The audience favorite winner at the final round, concertos performed with orchestra, was Tian Yang Liu. A special mention for the best performance of Bach went to Friedemann Schneeweiss from Germany. Chunyang Wang from China earned a special mention for the best performance of an original bass work post 1970. Congratulations to all the winners!
Yi-Jung Su, a student of Ed Barker, was first place winner in the 2010 Music Teachers National Association's Young Artists Competition, string instrument division. Congratulations!
ISB member Rosie Salvucci recently won third prize in the Boston Symphony Orchestra's annual concerto competition during the final round on March 10, 2010, playing Bottesini's Concerto No. 2. The competition for is open to advanced high school instrumentalists who reside in Massachusetts. Congratulations!

PASSAGES
Gerald Drucker, longtime principal bass of London's Philharmonia Orchestra, passed away on March 19, 2010 at the age of 84 after a 17-year battle with cancer. He was eulogized in The Guardian by Rodney Slatford as "an outstanding player with an unmistakable physical presence." A graduate of the Guildhall School of Music in London where he studied violin, French horn, cello, piano and tuba, he eventually joined the double bass class of James Merritt, the original principal bass of the Philharmonia Orchestra. He was also founder of the London Double Bass Quartet. A memorial concert is planned for July 28, 2010 at the Henry Wood Hall. He is survived by his wife, Leslie, three children and a sister, Ann.
Bassist Peter Zaluba recently died at the age of 95. He is survived by his wife, ISB member Elizabeth Hall Zaluba. Born on August 11, 1914, in Cicero, IL, Peter left high school to begin a career that encompassed vaudeville to the bass section of the Lyric Opera Orchestra and every important music venue in Chicago. He studied under former Chicago Symphony Orchestra principal Vaclav Jiskra. After retiring from the Lyric, Peter continued to play electric bass in ice shows, Shrine Circus, Ringling Brothers/Barnum and Bailey bands. He was a 62-year member of St. Cecelia Lodge, #865 AF&AM, a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Scottish Rite, and the Medinah Shrine and its "Million Dollar Brass Band'. He was a 75-year life member of AFM Local 10-208. He was also active in the Lithuanian Craftsmen's Club, a Masonic Club doing charitable work for children. The club honored him for his service in 2003.

The first and only biography to date of jazz bassist Scott LaFaro has been published by the University of North Texas Press. Written by his sister, Helene LaFaro Fernandez, Jade Visions tells the story of one of the 20th century's most influential jazz musicians. Best known for his recordings with Bill Evans, he played bass a mere seven years before his life and career were tragically cut short by an automobile accident at age 25. The book combines an intimate look at his family along with insights into LaFaro's music and career by Gene Lees, Don Thompson, Jeff Campbell, Phil Palombi, Barrie Kolstein, Chuck Ralston and many others. The Hong Kong Double Bass Camp 2010 (Asia), July 20-23, 2010, is for intermediate to advanced high school bass students.
