Robert Ross Keir Nairn was born May 11th to ISB president Rob Nairn and his wife Heidi von Bernewitz, the proud parents, big sister Giselle and big brother Teja. He weighed in at 7 lbs 10 oz and all are well, tired and happy in the land of Nairnia.

Congratulations to Joel Quarrington, principal bass with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, Canada, who has won the 2010 Juno Award for Garden Scene in the "Classical Album of the Year: Solo or Chamber Ensemble" category. The Juno is the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy. The CD is based on a recital program he performed for his ISB convention debut in 2007, and includes transcriptions and double bass repertoire by Korngold, Bottesini, Gliere and others. Congratulations, Joel!
The Bradetich Foundation announces registration and housing information to attend the International Double Bass Solo Competition, June 16-20, 2010. All bassists are invited to attend the 2010 Bradetich Foundation International Double Bass Solo Competition on the campus of the University of North Texas, in Denton, TX June 16-20. The Competition consists of three public rounds: The first round is Wednesday and Thursday, June 16 &17 from 10 am - 5 pm in the UNT College of Music Recital Hall. The second round is Friday, June 18 from 10 - 5 pm in the UNT College of Music Recital Hall. The final round is Sunday, June 20 at 7:30 pm in the Murchison Performing Arts Center on the UNT campus. Approximately 3 competitors will perform a full concerto with orchestra. Masterclasses will be given on Saturday, June 19 from 10 - 5:30 pm by the double bass judges of the competition, held in the Recital Hall. All three performance rounds of the Competition are open to the public at no charge, with donations accepted at the door. ISB member Joel Schimek was a recent soloist with the Fort Smith (Arkansas) Symphony in four performances of the Dittersdorf Concerto as part of the symphony's concerts for schools program. Joel is in 9th grade at Edmond Memorial High School in Edmond, Oklahoma. Joel's parents John (ISB board member, professor of bass at Oklahoma City) and Penny (ISB friend, professional orchestra trumpet player and teacher) joined Joel on stage for family trio encores. We've all seen the news broadcasts and the scenes of cars, buildings and homes washed away in Tennessee and surrounding areas. Lives have been lost and thousands of people have lost homes and property. Nashville is home to many musicians including ISB member Ike Harris from the Titan Hot Seven. Jazz historian, editor, award winning author and critic Eugene Frederick John "Gene" Lees died April 22nd at his home in Ojai, California. He was 82. The New York Times reports that the cause as a stroke. A former editor of Downbeat magazine, he started the Gene Lees Jazzletter. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Janet. Among his many books are Oscar Peterson: The Will to Swing, and You Can't Steal a Gift: Dizzy, Clark, Milt and Nat. He recently completed a biography of band leader Artie Shaw. He was also a lyricist, most famously for the Antonio Carlos Jobim hit Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars.

Ben Allison was invited to teach a one-week workshop on composition and group interplay at the Siena Jazz Foundation's International Jazz Master Program. Then he debuts a new group back in New York City at the Abrons Arts Center before heading back to Europe for a tour with the Ben Allison Band. Effective August 15, 2010, the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, is seeking an outstanding performer and teacher of the double bass with a strong background in music education. The position requires double bass performance, teaching double bass and supervising all string music education and pedagogy within the School. The individual will be expected to supervise master and doctoral committees and guide graduate student written work required for the various degrees, and supervise graduate teaching assistants in string technique class, supervise string teaching at the elementary laboratory school, conduct master classes and seminars in performance, recruit high-level students and maintain an active professional career. National and/or international prominence as a double bass performer with a substantive background in music education is essential. Expertise in teaching double bass and string music education at the university level is required. An earned doctoral degree in the area is also required. Full-time, nine-month, tenure-earning position, rank and salary negotiable. The 2010 Recital Music Composition Competition for Double Bass is open to composers of any age or nationality. The theme of the competition is the discovery of Jupiter's four largest moons in January 1610 by Galileo Galilei, now called the Galilean or 'Medician' satellites, in honor of their Florentine heritage. There are five categories and submitted works written in any style or idiom are acceptable. Composers may submit more than one entry, but each must be accompanied by the relevant entry fee. Works should be unpublished but may have been performed previously. Works written for 4-stringed basses, with the lowest note of E, and in any standard tuning are preferred. The Pirastro Strings Elite Soloists Program provides free tuition, room and board for 5 participants selected by audition to study with Jeff Bradetich June 1-5, 2010. The 17th annual Oklahoma City University Summer Double Bass Camp will be held July 18-24 at the Wanda L. Bass Music Center on the campus of Oklahoma City University. Directed by John Schimek, Professor of Double Bass at OCU, the weeklong camp for high school-college age students will offer opportunities for students of all abilities. Included are daily classes in technique, audition music, chamber music and each day will conclude with the "Bass Choir".
