Arizona Bass Players, Inc. announces its annual Festival and Workshop March 6-7, 2010 held at Pima Community College, Dr. Jason Roederer. The two-day event will feature concerts and workshops Saturday thru Sunday. Local Artists, Patrick Neher (University of Arizona), Catalin Rotaru (Arizona State University), and Joel DiBartilo (Northern Arizona University)are scheduled to perform and present master classes. Jeremy Kurtz and the San Diego State University bass department for a free tango masterclass with the Andés Martin, Monday, March 8th, 7 to 9 PM, M113 (Rhapsody Hall) at the SDSU School of Music and Dance building. Bassist and composer Andrés Martín, a native of Buenos Aires, is currently a member of the Orquesta de Baja California (OBC) in Tijuana.  He has extensive performance experience as an orchestral musician and soloist, and is a founding member of the chamber group "Cuatro Para Tango." His masterclass at San Diego State will include a short lecture and demonstration of traditional tango techniques that will be of interest to anyone with an interest in Tango. Yuan Xiong Lu, professor of double bass at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, gives a recital Monday, March 8 at 7:30 PM in the Pepsico Recital Hall on the TCU campus. He will perform Shostakovich, Bottesini, dittersdorf, Davidov and more, admission is free.

The University of Maryland Opera Studio presents Shadowboxer: An Opera Based on the Life of Joe Louis, with music by Frank Proto and libretto by his frequent collaborator, John Chenault, April 18, 21, 23 and 25, 2010. The production features projected images, an onstage jazz band and a 12-member chorus. David Murray will perform Paul Ramsier's "Divertimento Concertante" with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis on March 28 at 3pm at the Pike Performing Arts Center, Indianapolis. Also on the program will be mass-ensemble works featuring bass students of David and Bob Goodlett.

Dan Styffe will perform solo and chamber pieces at four different festivals/concert series in Norway in March, 2010: solo and chamber music by A. Pärt and G. Kurtag and Norwegian composers A. Bibalo and A. Nordheim, the Prokofiev quintet and the Saint  Saens septet.

 

Anthony Manzo, bassist with the New Century Chamber Orchestra and new faculty at the University of Maryland School of Music, will be performing with the St. Lawrence String Quartet and pianist Pedja Muzijevic on the Stanford Lively Arts series in Palo Alto, CA on Sunday, April 18th at 2:30 pm in Dinkelspiel Auditorium. The program will include Lanner's "Die Werber" Waltzes and Schubert's Trout Quintet.

In November, Chris White (Virginia Symphony Assistant Principal Bassist) and VSO violinist Pavel Ilyashov will play together in two performances of Bottesini's Grand Duo Concertante with the orchestra.  Performances are on November 18 at St. Bede's Church in Williamsburg and November 20 at Regent University in Virginia Beach.

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music is the only professional music school to receive the 2009 National Medal of Arts, the highest award given by the United States government to artists and arts patrons in recognition of their creative expressions. The 2010 Recital Music Composition Competition for Double Bass is open to composers of any age or nationality. The theme of the competition is the discovery of Jupiter's four largest moons in January 1610 by Galileo Galilei, now called the Galilean or 'Medician' satellites, in honor of their Florentine heritage. There are five categories and submitted works written in any style or idiom are acceptable. Composers may submit more than one entry, but each must be accompanied by the relevant entry fee.  Works should be unpublished but may have been performed previously. Works written for 4-stringed basses, with the lowest note of E, and in any standard tuning are preferred. Recordings may also be submitted with each entry. Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival, a part of the Redlands Community Music Association, Inc. announces the 59th Annual Young Artist Auditions.  The competition will be held Sunday, April 25, 2010 at University of Redlands, Watchorn Hall in Redlands, CA.  The first prize for the Junior Category is $500.  The first prize for the Senior Category is $1000 as well as the opportunity to perform in recital at the Redlands Bowl.  There are two categories of competition: Piano and Instrumental as well as Voice. The Junior Category is for those up to the age of 18. The Senior Category is for those age 19-26.  Preliminary Auditions begin at 1:00 pm and final auditions begin at 7:30 pm.  For more information, please e-mail info@redlandsbowl.org or call (909) 793-7316 or mail to RCMA, Inc. The Pirastro Strings Elite Soloists Program provides free tuition, room and board for 5 participants selected by audition to study with Jeff Bradetich June 1-5, 2010. Daily lessons and solo classes are held in a highly individualized program with a focus on developing an artist's level approach to solo performance. The First annual Bass Coalition Summer Bass Workshop and Solo Competition will take place June 24-26, 2010 on the campus of Shenandoah University-Conservatory in Winchester, VA, approximately one hour west of Washington, D.C.  Clinicians will include Rufus Reid, David Murray, Inez Wyrick and Donovan Stokes.  The Solo Competition will take place on June 24, 2010 with a top prize of $1000.  The three day workshop will be packed with ensembles, masterclasses, one-to-one instruction and concerts. The Bradetich Foundation announces the inaugural International Double Bass Solo Competition, June 16-20, 2010, hosted by the University of North Texas College of Music in Denton, Texas, USA. The competition is open to anyone under the age of 35 as of the first day of the competition June 16, 2010, and who has not given a formal New York City debut concert. The International Double Bass Solo Competition endeavors to identify emerging international artists and to provide career advancement and leadership opportunities. First place includes a $10,000 cash prize. The 17th annual Oklahoma City University Summer Double Bass Camp will be held July 18-24 at the Wanda L. Bass Music Center on the campus of Oklahoma City University.  Directed by John Schimek, Professor of Double Bass at OCU, the weeklong camp for high school-college age students will offer opportunities for students of all abilities.  Included are daily classes in technique, audition music, chamber music and each day will conclude with the "Bass Choir".  Non-bass playing teachers are invited to participate to improve their bass playing and teaching skills. The 15th Annual Golden Gate Bass Camp will take place the week of July 19-25, 2010 at Holy Names University in Oakland California under the direction of Barry Green.
