The 4th World Bass Festival in Wroclaw, Poland, Irena Olkiewicz, director, will be held  August 8-14, 2010. The roster of classical and jazz guest artists presenting concerts and masterclasses include Tom Martin, Joel Quarrington, Rufus Reid, Klazz Brothers & Cuba Percussion, Catalin Rotaru, Kristin Korb, Hiroshi Ikematsu, Tadeusz Gorny, Eric Hansen, Stefano Scodanibbio, Thierry Barbe, Barry Green, Miloslav Jelinek, Irena Olkiewicz, Ekkehard Beringer, Jakub Olejnik, Bassiona Polacca, Petya Bagovska, Adam Skrzypek, Miloslav Gajdoś, Dan Styffe, Patrick Neher, Hans Roelofsen, Aleksander Mikolajczyk, Gunars Upatnieks, Esra Gul Atalay, Yun Xia Hou, Song Yi, Shen Dongwen, Andrzej Dechnik, Grzegorz Frankowski, Kazimierz Cyna, Dominik Schulz, Pawel Jablczynski, Robert Piekos and Ryszard Kusek.  There will be a one-day competition for classical and jazz bassists offering prizes and certificates, and the festival will also include exhibits by bass makers and double bass shops from England, Germany, France, Italy, the USA and China. Registration for players is 150 Euros or 100 Euros to audit, with an administration fee of 10 Euros. The entry fee for the competition is 25 Euros. The registration deadline is June 30, 2010. The Richard Davis Foundation for Young Bassists, Inc will hold its 17th Annual Bass Conference on Easter weekend, April 2-3, 2010 at the Pyle Center in Madison, Wisconsin. Zachary Simner 

Bret Simner and his wife Emily welcomed their new son Zachary on December 8, 2009 in Basel, Switzerland. Bret reports that Zachary is already growing quickly, and that he and Emily are getting used to the new sleep schedule.

David Murray will perform Paul Ramsier's "Divertimento Concertante" with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis on March 28 at 3pm at the Pike Performing Arts Center, Indianapolis. Also on the program will be mass-ensemble works featuring bass students of David and Bob Goodlett.  
 

Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival, a part of the Redlands Community Music Association, Inc. announces the 59th Annual Young Artist Auditions.  The competition will be held Sunday, April 25, 2010 at University of Redlands, Watchorn Hall in Redlands, CA.  The first prize for the Junior Category is $500.  The first prize for the Senior Category is $1000 as well as the opportunity to perform in recital at the Redlands Bowl.  There are two categories of competition: Piano and Instrumental as well as Voice.  The Junior Category is for those up to the age of 18.  The Senior Category is for those age 19-26.  Preliminary Auditions begin at 1:00 pm and final auditions begin at 7:30 pm.  For more information, please e-mail [email protected] or call (909) 793-7316 or mail to RCMA, Inc. Arizona Bass Players, Inc. announces its annual Festival and Workshop March 6-7, 2010 held at Pima Community College, Dr. Jason Roederer. The two-day event will feature concerts and workshops Saturday thru Sunday. Local Artists, Patrick Neher (University of Arizona), Catalin Rotaru (Arizona State University), and Joel DiBartilo (Northern Arizona University)are scheduled to perform and present master classes. Frank Murry will perform the world premiere of "From a Visible Darkness" by Daniel Adams for solo double bass at the NACUSA Texas Annual Conference.  The concert will take place on Friday, February 26 at 8 PM at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas (Recital Hall, School of Music).

On Saturday, February 13th at 8 PM, at Victoria College Chapel on the University of Toronto campus, Scaramella will present "A Bach Extravaganza," centering around the sonatas for viola da gamba and obbligato harpsichord, performed by Jo�lle Morton (gamba) and Sara-Anne Churchill (harpsichord). $25 general admission, $20 seniors, $15 students, children under 14 free. from the home of Pierre Feyler near Paris, France: fine 5-string double bass with "GAND 1869" label inside, dark red varnish. Also stolen, two bows, one "F�tique" (wood repaired with metal just next to the button). The theft was targeted on the bass, and seems the work of specialists. On March 4, 2010, in the Madrid Auditorio Nacional, Stefano Scodanibbio will conduct "Composition No. 2 - Dies Irae" by Galina Ustvolskaya for 8 double basses, piano and percussion. The featured bass ensemble is Ludus Gravis, led by Daniele Roccato. Music by Arvo P�rt, John Cage and Scodanibbio will also be on the program. The Ustvolskaya will be repeated on April 13, 2010, in Macerata Italy, at the Rassegna di Nuova Musica.

The Strings International Music Festival, featuring members of The Philadelphia Orchestra, has a new YouTube Channel, www.youtube.com/stringscamp, and is holding a video competition - open to strings, winds, harp, and piano players ages 5 to 25. Competitors and voters will be eligible for prizes, and the grand prizewinner will receive a $400 scholarship to the Strings International Music Festival. The Pirastro Strings Elite Soloists Program provides free tuition, room and board for 5 participants selected by audition to study with Jeff Bradetich June 1-5, 2010. The 2010 Recital Music Composition Competition for Double Bass is open to composers of any age or nationality. The theme of the competition is the discovery of Jupiter's four largest moons in January 1610 by Galileo Galilei, now called the Galilean or 'Medician' satellites, in honor of their Florentine heritage. There are five categories and submitted works written in any style or idiom are acceptable. Composers may submit more than one entry, but each must be accompanied by the relevant entry fee.  Works should be unpublished but may have been performed previously. Works written for 4-stringed basses, with the lowest note of E, and in any standard tuning are preferred. Recordings may also be submitted with each entry. The Bradetich Foundation announces the inaugural International Double Bass Solo Competition, June 16-20, 2010, hosted by the University of North Texas College of Music in Denton, Texas, USA. The competition is open to anyone under the age of 35 as of the first day of the competition June 16, 2010, and who has not given a formal New York City debut concert. The International Double Bass Solo Competition endeavors to identify emerging international artists and to provide career advancement and leadership opportunities. First place includes a $10,000 cash prize.
