Mike's Master Classes has released new classes by Christian McBride, Harvie S and Drew Gress. Coming soon is another class by Harvie S, a new class by Lynn Seaton, plus a workshop by Ron Carter, streamed live from David Gage String Instruments, with a recording to follow. There are also many workshops recorded at the ISB Convention in June, 2009, available for download.

David Gage String Instruments will host legendary jazz bassist Ron Carter on November 4th as part of its 2009-2010 Workshop Series. Both workshops take place at 7:15 PM. Seating is limited and expected to sell out quickly.The workshop will also be webcast and available for sale afterwards from Mike's Master Classes, www.mikesmasterclasses.com. Paul Ellison will give a presentation on the progression of ensemble bow strokes as they relate to period and contemporary bows at the Parkside Performance Café, University of Southern California, on Thursday, November 5, 2009, 5-7 PM. He will also give a masterclass for students of the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music the next day, Friday, November 6, 2009, 4-7 PM, in the Marcia Lucas Building LPB. All are welcome to attend! Nilson Matta's Brazilian Voyage performs "The Music of Black Orpheus" with special guest, pianist Kenny Barron, November 3-8 at Dizzy's Club in New York City, and New Year's Eve at The Kitano club in New York City.
 
ISB member Gunars Upatnieks of Latvia, winner of the 2007 ISB solo competition, has won first prize and the audience favorite award in the double bass division of the 58th ARD International Music Competition. Gunars, who opened the 2009 ISB convention with a superb recital, is a student of Miloslav Jelinek. Congratulations, Gunars!
 
Ben Williams has taken first prize in the 2009 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Bass Competition. Ben won the 2005 ISB jazz competition. Second place winner was ISB member Joe Sanders, who also came in second at the 2009 ISB jazz competition, and taking third prize was ISB member Matt Brewer. Congratulations to these gifted young artists! Ron Carter, who served on the judges' panel for the competition, will be in residence at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance at Loyola University, January 18-22, 2010.
 
Håkon Thelin
and Stefano Scodanibbio are joining forces for a concert tour of Norway, in addition to giving lectures and masterclasses. They will perform their own duo and solo compositions, a rarely played work by Sylvano Bussotti and improvisations, plus Håkon Thelin will premiere a new piece for solo double bass with tape: November 15th, concert, Gråmølna Art Gallery, Trondheim; November 17th, concert, No 5 Bergen Arthall, Bergen; November 18th , lecture, Tou Scene, Stavanger; November 18th , concert, Tou Scene, Stavanger; November 19th, concert, Levin hall, Norwegian Academy of Music, Oslo; November 20th, lecture and masterclass, Norwegian Academy of Music, Oslo. Francois Rabbath will give a recital on Saturday November, 21st at the Yehudi Menuhin School, Stoke d'Abernon, Cobham, Surrey KT11 3QQ, United Kingdom, accompanied by his son Sylvan and the Menuhin School Orchestra, in Menuhin Hall at 7:30 PM.  He will also be working with pupils from the Yehudi Menuhin School on Double Bass Day, November 22nd, from 10 AM to 4 PM. Bass players of all ages and stages are welcome to attend this free day of discussion and practical demonstration. They should bring their basses if they would like to take part in the workshops. Ed Barker, principal double bass of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and flutist Doriot Anthony Dwyer, former principal flutist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, will perform "Lumiere Noir" for flute and double bass by Boston composer Hayg Boyadjian on Monday, November 16, 2009, 7:30 PM at the First Parish Church in Lexington Center, MA. It was written for and is dedicated to bassist Bert Turetzky. Admission is by voluntary donation and will be followed by a reception where the audience can meet the musicians.

The Bradetich Foundation announces the inaugural International Double Bass Solo Competition, June 16-20, 2010, hosted by the University of North Texas College of Music in Denton, Texas, USA. The competition is open to anyone under the age of 35 as of the first day of the competition June 16, 2010, and who has not given a formal New York City debut concert. The International Double Bass Solo Competition endeavors to identify emerging international artists and to provide career advancement and leadership opportunities. First place includes a $10,000 cash prize.
