The 2009 ISB convention at Penn State University broke another attendance record, with an estimated 1,300 bassists, exhibitors, family members and guests enjoying more than 100 events over the course of the week.

The USAF Heritage of America Band announces an immediate vacancy for String/Electric Bass. The audition will take place on Langley AFB in Hampton, VA on September 21, 2009. Idyllwild Arts Academy
is still accepting applications from talented high school age bassists for the 2009-10 academic year. Jeffry Eckels will take over as head of jazz bass studies at the University of North Texas while Lynn Seaton is on sabbatical during the fall, 2009 semester. In collaboration with Istituzione Casa della Musica and the Traiettorie Festival 2009, Fondazione Prometeo will hold a Masterclass for Composers with Stefano Scodanibbio, September 21-22 at Casa della Musica - P.le S. Francesco 1, Parma. Composers should submit a piece (maximum 10 minutes) for solo double bass solo by July 31st to be studied and performed by Stefano Scodanibbio for the masterclasses. The classes are open to registered auditors. For information go to www.fondazioneprometeo.it/masterclass_scodanibbio_e.html.  
 
The 2010 Stulberg Competition at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo will take place Saturday, February 27, 2010. Judges will be the members of the Juilliard Quartet. The application deadline is Dec 18, 2009. Top prize is $5,000 plus a performance with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. Arni Egilsson will hold a workshop for jazz bass during the Hollywood (Film) Music Workshop at the  J.G. Albrechtsberger Musikschule in Klosterneuburg,  Austria, July 7-9, 2009. Classes will be held in German and English, and class size will be limited to 10. Werner Fleischmann, on the faculties of the University of Vienna and the Hellmesberger Institute, will also be giving a double bass masterclass during the event. Make plans to attend an international double bass masterclass with Christine Hoock, August 20-27, 2009, in Gorizia in northeastern Italy at the foot of the Alps and bordering Slovenia. All lessons, rehearsals, accommodations and meals will be held in the charming and historic Palazzo Lantieri in the center of Gorizia. Christine and Tomoko Takahashi will give a concert to open the week. Participants will give public concerts in the Palazzo and around town. The 2009 Texas Double Bass Symposium will be held October 24-25, 2009 at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Special guest artists are François Rabbath and Joel Quarrington. The faculty, subject to change, includes George Amorim (UT Pan-Am), Jeff Bradetich (UNT), Paul Ellison (Rice), Kip Green (TCU,  jazz), Yuan Xiong Lu (TCU), Mark Morton (Texas Tech), David Neubert (UT Austin), Sandor Ostlund (Baylor University), Tim Pitts (Rice and Houston Symphony), John Schimek (Oklahoma City University), Lynn Seaton (UNT, jazz), Anthony Stoops (Oklahoma University), Dennis Whittaker (Univ. of Houston) and Da Xun Zhang (UT Austin). Bing Luo (Shanghai Conservatory) and Tian Rui Zhao (Shenyang Conservatory) will give masterclasses. In addition to lectures, recitals, masterclasses and exhibits, the symposium will feature a student recital, an All-State Workshop for high school students, and an Orchestra Mock Audition with $500 first prize. The 16th Oklahoma City University Summer Bass Camp will be held July 12-16, 2009 in the Wanda L. Bass Music Center at Oklahoma City University, site of the 2007 ISB Convention.
