The great Gary Karr, founder of the ISB, is interviewed for the featured cover story in this month's issue of The Strad. He discusses the importance of touch in performance.
Among the guest artists also appearing at the ISB convention is pianist James Weidman on piano, who will appear with Harvie S. James has been part of Joe Lovano's band for 6 years and worked with Abbey Lincoln and Steve Coleman, among others, and has released a number of CDs as a leader.
The well known Uruguayan-Brazilian double bassist, Professor Milton Romay Masciadri, father of University of Georgia double bass professor Milton Masciadri, hass passed away. The senior Masciadri was assistant principal bass of the OSSODRE Symphony in Uruguay and principal bass of the OSPA Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra in Brazil for more than 30 years. He was the professor of the Music institute of the Symphony Orchestra as well as member of the UNISINOS Chamber Orchestra. He was a major force for the double bass in Brazil and will be deeply missed by friends, family and his many former students. Jazz bassist Peter Chivily died on May 6th, 2009 after a brief battle with cancer. He was 68. An original member of the Stan Kenton Orchestra, he performed with Frank Sinatra, June Christie and the Four Freshmen. He was recently honored by the Assembly of the State of New York for his contribution to the art.
Early Music America has honored Jerry Fuller with the Early Music Outreach Award for his work Midwest Young Artists (MYA), one of the leading youth music ensemble programs in the Midwest. In addition to his work with MYA, Fuller is principal double bassist of The Baroque Band and a member of the period instrument forces for Chicago's Music of the Baroque and Chicago Opera Theater. He is the director of Ars Antigua, and has written about period instruments and performance practice for The Strad, Double Bassist, and Bass World magazines.
ISB member Catrin Dowd was selected by the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association to perform as one of four gala soloists at the 2009 Michigan Youth Arts Festival, May 7-9, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She was also selected for participation in the Honors Orchestra. Catrin is a junior at Community High School. She is bass section leader at Pioneer High School and principal bassist of the Michigan Youth Symphony Orchestra. She studies with Derek Weller. Matt Hare performed the Prokofiev Quintet with his fellow faculty members at the University of California at Irvine on May 9th as part of the university's Chamberfest series. Later that month he performed as soloist with Saddleback College's Wind Ensemble in Johan de Meij's cello concerto "Casanova." ISB member Nate West of Columbus, Ohio, has been selected as a 2009 Presidential Scholar in the Arts. He is one of only four instrumental musicians chosen and will be headed for DC the week after the ISB competition and convention to perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Inclusion in the Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 45th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, character and involvement in community and school activities.Congratulations, Nate!

The 2010 Stulberg Competition at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo will take place Saturday, February 27, 2010. Judges will be the members of the Juilliard Quartet. The application deadline is Dec 18, 2009. Top prize is $5,000 plus a performance with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. The VSA/Oberlin Advanced Topics Workshop will be held July 5-12, 2009. The course will focus on the set-up, repair and acoustics of the double bass, topics to include: fingerboard planing and adjustment, bridge fitting, innovative crack repair techniques, and set-up variations for classical and jazz playing. The workshop hopes to take advantage of world-class acoustics experts who will be faculty members of the concurent VSA/Oberlin Acoustics Workshop. Participants are encouraged to bring project instruments if practical, and must bring their own hand tools, set-up and repair parts needed for individual projects. The 2009 Texas Double Bass Symposium will be held October 24-25, 2009 at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Special guest artists are François Rabbath and Joel Quarrington. The 16th Oklahoma City University Summer Bass Camp will be held July 12-16, 2009 in the Wanda L. Bass Music Center at Oklahoma City University, site of the 2007 ISB Convention. The week-long camp for ages high school and up of all abilities features training in all aspects of bassdom. The camp concludes with a Bass Blast! concert featuring music for bass choir.
