L'Orchestre de Contrebasses returns to New York for the first time in more than a decade with Bass, Bass, Bass, Bass, Bass and Bass. The six members - Xavier Lugué, Etienne Roumanet, Olivier Moret, Yves Torchinsky, Jean-Philippe Viret, and Christian Gentet - perform original works drawing from their jazz, contemporary and classical musical roots, and employ lighting and movement, drama and comedy. Shows will be presented at the Connolly Theater, 220 East 4th Street, New York, NY. Performances are every night at 8 PM, Tuesday through Sunday, from November 27th to December 21st. Tickets are $20 ($15 for students) and are available through SmartTix ( www.smarttix.com). Kids aged 4 to 8 and their parents are invited to L'Orchestre's children's show, Bass Wishes, on Saturdays and Sundays at noon (additional showings over the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, November 27th and Friday November 28th). On November 21, Mark Dresser and Sarah Weaver will give a Presentation on Deep Tones for Peace, a Co-Located Music Performance for Peace in the Middle East, to be streamed worldwide on April 25, 2009 from Jerusalem and New York. Bassist Mark Dresser will perform Multiplicities of Hope at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, presented by the World Association of Former United Nations Interns and Fellows, Inc., with an awards ceremony celebrating 30 years in a quest for peace. Rob Nairn will be joining the Juilliard School in Fall, 2009 as adjunct faculty, teaching Double Bass/Violone in the newly established Historical Performance Program. Aimed at fostering informed, vital interpretations with the level of technical excellence and musical integrity for which the School is renowned, the Juilliard Historical Performance program will offer a comprehensive course of study for young artists with a special interest in music from the High Baroque through the early Classical eras. All Historical Performance majors will be on full tuition scholarship. Results of the 2008 Sperger International Competition, held September 29-October 5, 2008, in Ludwigslust, Germany, birthplace and home of Johan Matthias Sperger, are: 1st prize winner (5,000 Euros): Gunars Upatnieks (Latvia). The 2nd prize (3,500 Euros): Kevin Jablonski, Rice University, USA, who also won a prize for best interpreation of the required work by Frank Proto, "Required No. 5." 3rd prize (Seifert silver bow) went to Thierry Roggen (Switzerland). The 4th prize (Penzel bow) and a special jury prize went to Mi Kyung Soung (Korea), who was the youngest participant at age 15. The 2009 Stulberg String Competition will be held Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Western Michigan University. The application deadline is December 15, 2008. All string instrument students under the age of 20 are invited to apply. The 2009 judges are Miriam Fried, Ronald Leonard and Richard Young. Jury members were Silvio Dalla Torre (Germany), Jury Chair, Ho Gyo Lee (Korea), Miloslav Gajdos (Czech Republic), Christine Hoock (Austria), Thomas Martin (Great Britain), Frank Proto (USA), Francois Rabbath (France), and Paul Ellison (USA). The performances were at a very high level, and balloting was done "Olympics style," with judges tossing out the highest and lowest votes and before any discussion. The entire first round was behind a screen. Those involved extend their thanks and congratulations to the competition hosts, Landermusikrat, The Sperger Society and the City of Ludwigslust, for presenting a world class artistic event.
