The Tom Knific Quartet with special guests Ryan Andrews and Trent Kynaston hold a CD Release Concert on October 3, 2008, 8:15 PM, at the Dalton Center Recital Hall, Western Michigan University. Derek Zadinsky recently won the principal bass (Virginia Flick Chair) auditions for the Symphony in C, formerly known as the Haddonfield (NJ) Symphony. Derek is a third year student at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studies with Harold Robinson and Edgar Meyer. This past summer he was a fellowship student at the Aspen Music Festival and School.

The boutique jazz label, Blue Bamboo Music, is bringing New York jazz bassist Harvie S to Houston, Texas, for a week of performances and recordings, October 14-21. Harvie will appear with Chris Cortez (acoustic guitar), Woody Witt (tenor and soprano sax), Joe LoCascio (piano), Joel Fulgham (drums), and James Metcalf (percussion) at San Jacinto College, Houston Community College, and Cezanne's, Houston's premier jazz venue. A live recording will be made of the HCC concert, and the band will also return to the HCC space for a private recording session. The CD will be released by Blue Bamboo Music in early 2009. Harvie's latest CD, Now Was the Time, is a vintage 1986 recording session with pianist Kenny Barron, just released for the first time on High Note Records. On October 20, 2008 at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center, famed jazz photographer Herman Leonard will accept the 2008 Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Portraiture. The Lucie Awards is a 501(c)3 Charitable Foundation whose mission is to celebrate the greatest achievements in photography, to discover new and emerging talent and to promote the appreciation of photography worldwide. The John Kirby Memorial Bass Workshop will be held in Winchester, VA, October 4th, with special guest artist (and ISB board member and jazz recording reviewer for Bass World) Chris Kosky. Paul Erhard, professor of double bass at the University of Colorado College of Music in Boulder, will be touring in October with his West-meets-East Indian Classical Music trio ATMIC VISION, a fusion of double bass, bansuri (bamboo flute), and tabla. The group will be performing concerts, giving master classes and presenting its interactive "Expanding the Horizons" Indian music workshop in Colorado, Chicago, Madison WI, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Paris, France. Jeremy Kurtz will be giving two recitals with pianist Daniel Alfred Wachs in Southern California to celebrate the release of his CD, "Sonatas and Meditations." For more information go to www.jeremykurtz.com. Peter Derenski is searching for information regarding the whereabouts of his grandfather's bass for sentimental reasons. His grandfather was Frank Kieca, and he played in the Indianapolis and Chicago Symphony orchestras. His instrument was a Grancino, c. 1690. After Frank's death, his widow sold the bass to one of his students, Rudy Fahsbender, who played with the Chicago Symphony until 1968. His son also played bass and inherited all the instruments when Rudy passed away. If readers have any information about the instrument's whereabouts, Peter has his grandfather's notes on the history of the bass to pass along to the current owner. Nick Scales began the day with a group warmup for all of the students, Michael Berry (assistant professor of music theory at TTU and also a bassist) taught a workshop for our middle school age bassists, and Dr. Mark Morton taught a workshop for the high school level bassists. Todd spent over a year soliciting original jazz compositions from the public at large and formed a quintet to interpret them. This select group of individuals, known as the "Learning Community," then collaborated in the creative process, yielding very interesting results. Arizona Bass Players, Inc. has established the David Walter Memorial Scholarship in Double Bass, for a graduate student to study double bass performance at any of the three state universities in Arizona, or other location by choice of the recipient. Claudia Barritt, David Walter's widow, is heading up the fund drive, with a goal of providing a graduate teaching assistantship salary for a maximum three years of graduate study. The endowment fund target is $200,000. The Fund has collected donations from David's former students and family members. Ali Yazdanfar is the new principal bass with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal, Canada. Ali has also joined the music faculty at McGill University, joining Joel Quarrington, Brian Robinson and Eric Chappell.
Jeremy McCoy has joined the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music. He is also assistant principal bass with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra Orchestra. Players from around the world will travel to Paris for Bass 2008 at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique, October 30th - November 3rd, 2008. Renowned artists of all genres - classical, contemporary, avant-garde and jazz - will give masterclasses, showcases, clinics, recitals and evening concerts.
