Omnium Repeat for Zavyalov, Andersons
As the 2011 Three-Day Grind commenced, six cat 1/2/3 teams signed up for three nights of classic European bike racing. Amid this first night, TNL races were also held for the cat 3, cat 4/5 and women riders. For the second time in three weeks, the names Zavyalov and Anderson swept the standings as Innokenty, Charlie and Jeff took the cat 3 omnium, respectively.

The cat 3s warmed up the track with a 12-lap tempo promptly led out by Andrew Sherve (SpeedFix) and Bryan Gerding (MCT/Freewheel), who accumulated the first and second lap points.  Jeff Anderson (SpeedFix) and Charlie Anderson (Bianchi/GP) seized control for the next four laps before Innokenty Zavyalov (Omnium) attacked. Josh Schwentos (Kenwood) followed on his heels and retained first place points in one lap; however, an unstoppable Zavyalov claimed five of the final six laps-enough for a solid win.

Zavyalov carried his momentum into the Win & Out. Schwentos and Jeff Anderson worked to wear down the field in the first five laps, but at the bell Zavyalov burst off the front to win the first sprint and the race. From there, SpeedFix took control with Emma Bast, Jeff Anderson and Andrew Sherve forcing the field to chase and creating a close second sprint, which went to Jeff Anderson. From there, Charlie Anderson and Bryan Gerding amped up the pace. Charlie Anderson outsprinted Gerding for third; Gerding took a comfortable fourth, and a stealth attack in the south turn earned fifth for Tom Oliphant (Flanders).

The cat 3 racers capped the night with a 40-lap scratch. Despite early attacks by Bast and Zavyalov, the field remained mostly in tact until the last 4K. Sherve and Jeff Anderson upped the pace, followed by Charlie Anderson, Gerding, and Zavyalov. Bast bridged the gap, allowing the field to regroup. With five to go Zavyalov, the Andersons and Bast cranked up the intensity once more. As the bell signaled the final sprint, Jeff Anderson tore off out of the saddle to be first across the line. Gerding, Charlie Anderson, Zavyalov and Bast rounded out the top five.

Kruse/Bergstrom Take 3-Day Grind

Six Madison teams started their 3-day odyssey during the Thursday Night Lights event on August 18.  After a well-balanced series of races on Thursday, the teams headed into Friday's events with the top 3 teams separated by a handful of points.  Friday's session started ominously with low clouds and a sprinkle coating the track.  After a 30-minute delay, the teams launched some serious efforts.  At the end of the night, by virtue of the lap they gained in the evening's final Madison, Andy Kruse and Rich Bergstrom (both Speedfix) lead the field.  Saturday's shortened program did little to change the standings and Kruse/Bergstrom took the 2011 3-Day Grind title.

Racing 101
Handicap Race
A short scratch race in which some of the competitors are given a head start based on their strength relative to the other riders. The racer who starts at the start/finish line with no head start is said to be "riding from scratch." If the handicapper does the job right the race often comes all together at the finish line.
