Race Report/News
Women's Field Flies
Ten women, including three junior racers, took the rail for the Miss & Out race during Thursday Night Lights June 16. The field remained tightly packed and aggressive throughout the race with riders flicking wheels and shuffling position to avoid elimination. In a hotly contested sprint for third Terra James (Sweet n Salty) and Melissa Dahlmann (Omnium) squeezed out Linsey Hamilton (Synergy) before going toe-to-toe for the finish. In a furious dash for the line, Dahlmann put up a good fight before James claimed victory by inches.

With Emilia Field (ISCorp) visiting from the Ed Rudolph Velodrome in Northbrook, Ill., the junior girls raced their own Chariot. Field took the lead for the first lap until Valerie McGoldrick (MnJRC) pursued her in the north turn. Waiting to make her move, Anya Malarski (MnJRC) waged an attack with 100m and held her ground for the win.

The Queen of the Sprint Keirin Final saw seven racers line up. James swept in and opted to take the motor. As the pace ticked up, the field jockeyed for position. When the motor rolled off-track Hamilton took charge and muscled to the finish for a commanding victory.

Back to a field of 10, the women ended the night's up-tempo lineup with a 30-lap points race. Following the first sprint, the pace stayed brisk as several attempted to break away and wear out the field. Megan Kelly (Omnium) hungrily pursued her first-ever points with success. Dahlmann flew solo for many laps and racked up enough points for the win. Hamilton, Dorr, Kelly and James rounded out the top 5.

Racing 101
Unknown Distance

A scratch race in which the number of laps is known only by the chief official. Riders try to second guess the official as to when the race will finish. The gun is fired at 1 1/2 laps from the finish to signal the distance is about to be completed.

What to watch for: Look for riders to "take a flyer" with the gamble that the race will end while they are away from the pack or that they can get themselves into the proper position from which to sprint, at the time the race nears its end. It's anybody's guess!
