Thursday Night Lights Results
August 12, 2010
Rain Shortens Thursday Night Lights
Racing was shortened in more ways than one last Thursday as the last four races of the evening (the endurance events) were overwhelmed by lightning and major cloudbursts over the NSC Velodrome.  Each field contested the first two events on their cards.  A solid game of Velo Bowling sponsored by OSI Physical Therapy finished the night before Mother Nature changed the racing plan.
Kids Make Their Mark On Men's Cat 4/5 Field
Two new racers joined the Cat 4/5 field from the Future Stars Junior Racing Program and experienced junior Merrill Lutsky (Silver Cycling) set the tone for the rest of the 4 / 5s.  The 10-lap scratch race began at a brisk pace and stayed fast to the end. With 3 laps to go, Tonka cycling teammates Kevin Lennon and Eric Ware went to the front and led out the final sprint.  Ware led at the bell but was passed by Lutsky  and Brian Duncan (Bianchi/GP). Lutsky took the win going away with Ryan Brown (unattached) edging out Duncan for 2nd place.

Early eliminations in the Cat 4/5 miss were riders spit out the back or caught inside; the common causes for elimination. John McGuire (unattached) was able to hold on for 5th but was out of gas as was Lennon who finished 4th.  Kai Curry (unattached) was out-sprinted at the line and took 3rd. Curry and Lennon's finishing order was reversed after the race as Curry was judged to have interfered with Lennon at the line and was relegated.  That left Lutsky and Jeff Anderson (Loon State) battling for the win. With 200 meters to go, Lutsky kicked it in. Anderson hesitated just enough for Lutsky to get a small gap which he maintained for the win.  A good night for the junior racer Merrill Lutsky.

Peace Coffee Grind Returns
August 19-20
Peace CoffeeMinnesota has a rich tradition of multi-day team cycling.  Minneapolis was home to the first continuous six-day bicycle race in the United States in 1896.  During the Golden Age of Cycling in the 1920s and 30s, Minneapolis was a regular stop on the 6-Day circuit. We are reviving this thrilling sporting style with the Peace Coffe Grind.

The Peace Coffee Grind combines strength, agility and teamwork in an exciting series of races pitting 2-person teams in sprints, endurance races and the popular Madison - named for its birthplace, Madison Square Garden.  During Madison races, both members of the team circle the track, one member racing and one member riding slowly - resting at the top of the track.  When the first rider tires, the second rider swoops down and is thrown into the race by his teammate.

Races will also be held in the Category 4/5 and Women's fields on both Thursday and Friday.
