Thursday Night Lights Results
July 15, 2010
The weather was perfect for a night of track racing. The stands were packed on both sides of the track as participants and spectators of the Schwan's USA CUP soccer tournament turned out to watch the fastest bike racing in Minnesota. PUMA was on hand giving great prizes to both racers and fans, including two Everyman cruiser bikes awarded to the winners of the Cat 4/5 Miss and Out and the open Track Stand competition. Congratulations to Aaron Koehler (Flat City Cycling) and Chris Ferris (PJW Racing), both of whom took victory laps on their new steeds!

Salsa King of the Sprints - MN State Championship Keirin
Salsa Cycles LogoCat 3 riders swelled the field in the Salsa King of the Sprints MN State Championship Keirin to 17 riders. Three preliminary heats whittled the field to Adam Bergman, Colton Barrett, Pat Lemieux (all Texas Roadhouse), Chris Ferris (PJW Racing), Andy Kruse (Speedfix) and Conrade Thomas (Lakeside Velo), the only Cat 3 rider to make it to the final. Thomas drew the pole position and followed the motorcycle for 5 ½ laps. When the motor left the track, the Texas Roadhouse team jumped together. With 2 laps to go, Ferris' front wheel and a pedal of one of the other riders tried to occupy the same space. The pedal won and Ferris wobbled off the track at high speed and out of the race. Despite the total loss of the wheel and some nervous moments, Ferris walked away from the incident.  Back on the track, Lemieux attacked with 400 meters to go and gained  a 20 meter gap. Kruse and Thomas pursued and bridged but were inches short at the finish. Pat Lemieux is the 2010 Minnesota Keirin Champion.
State Championship Scratch Races
July 8, 2010
Men
Nineteen riders started the 64-lap State Championship Scratch Race including five riders from the Trinidad&Tobago national team training here for the Central American and Caribbean Games this Summer. A few early attacks tested the resolve of the pack but all were reeled back until, with 45 laps to go, Tim Mulrooney (Synergy) attacked and drew Dan Schueller (Gopher Wheelmen) and Adam Alexander (Trinidad&Tobago). This would be the winning break. The three stayed out for the rest of the race but were unable to close on the attentive, hard-riding pack half a lap behind them. On a number of occasions riders tried to bridge across, most notably, Colton Barrett (Texas Roadhouse), Dan Casper (Grandstay) and Andy Kruse (Speedfix). All of these attempts were covered by the remaining Trinidad+Tobago riders and no one was able to close on to the lead trio. Officials pulled lapped riders, trimming the field to the 12 fastest. Schueller led the front trio at the bell but Mulrooney and Alexander rode past him in the back stretch and he had to settle for 3rd. Alexander held off Mulrooney to the line for the win. Jisuae Phillip (Trinidad&Tobago) outsprinted Kruse for 4th in the race. The Trinidad&Tobago riders were not eligible for Minnesota State Championship medals which went to: Tim Mulrooney (gold), Dan Schueller (silver) and Andy Kruse (bronze).

Women (Bikery Scratch Race)
Six riders contested the 32-lap women's State Championship Scratch Race. Megan Kelly (Gopher Wheelmen), Elena Dorr (Verve) and Terra James (behind bars/LGR) kept the tempo high early in the race. Kelly attacked with 25 laps to go but got no more than 40 meters on the field and was reeled in with 21 laps to go. Things settled down to a moderate pace for the next 15 laps, the riders tacitly agreeing to contest the race in the final sprint. With 3 laps to go, Dorr and Megan Lennon (behind bars/LGR) upped the pace. Dorr attacked at the bell with James and Sandy Gress (Synergy) following. James was unable to close on Dorr and Gress was unable to close on James. The final State Championship result: Elena Dorr (gold), Terra James (silver) and Sandy Gress (bronze). Newcomer Caitlin van Kooten (Teter) took 4th.

Miss and Out
The Miss and Out or "Devil take the hindmost" is an elimination race in which the last rider across the finish line every other lap is withdrawn from the race. The tension builds lap after lap as the riders fight for position at the back of the pack. One by one the field is whittled down to the final three riders who then sprint for first second and third place.

What to watch for: Watch for crowding at the rear of the pack as riders attempt to move forward to avoid elimination at the line. Some riders will purposely ride at the back to "play the devil" by sprinting at the last second to pass the other riders. Later in the race, the field is smaller but often more tired and the ability to sprint fast is important.
