THURSDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
Thursday, May 27
Another perfect Spring evening at the NSC Velodrome brought an energetic crowd to the 2nd night of Thursday Night Lights racing.  The featured event, the ArtJersey Queen of the Sprints marked the first race of that season-long series and earned one lucky fan a free ArtJersey.

Art Jersey LogoThe first ArtJersey Queen of the Sprint (QOS) competition for 2010 was a Keirin. Jennifer Greenberg (Team Kenda) drew the pole position and, when the motor went off with 2.5 laps to go, led the field to the bell before succumbing to Elena Dorr's (Verve Racing) attack. Dorr's effort drew Linsey Hamilton (Synergy) and Terra James (Behind Bars/LGR) into the fray on the back straight. In a furious sprint, Dorr barely held off Hamilton at the line for the win with James closely following. The win was the second of three for Dorr, giving her the second consecutive hat trick in the women's field - matching James's success of May 20.

MN Fixed Gear Classic Racers Announced
June 11-13, 2010
A strong international field will once again contest the MN Fixed Gear Classic.  The world-class start list includes Olympians, National Champions and World Cup competitors.  The men's field is led by defending Fixed Gear Classic champion, Emile Abraham.  Abraham owns numbers national championships in his native Trinidad and Tobago - a Caribbean track cycling hotbed.  Multi-event US national champion, Austin Carroll and many more will look to move Abraham down the podium.

On the women's side, US national champion and World Cup racer, Cari Higgins leads a strong field of experienced track racers.  Kacey Manderfield brings her European 6-day racing experience to the MN Fixed Gear Classic and will prove formidable competition for Higgins.

A full roster of racers will be released shortly.
Colby Pearce To Host Clinics
Clinics during Fixed Gear Classic
MN Fixed Gear Classic racer and former USA Cycling national team coach, Colby Pearce, will present two endurance cycling clinics as part of the MN Fixed Gear Classic activities.  On Friday, June 11 from 9-11, Pearce will conduct a hands-on Madison clinic focusing on technique and strategy.  Madison clinic attendees are not required to ride and may take part in off-track discussions and drills.  Also on June 11, from 1-2:30 at The Fix, Pearce will conduct a classroom clinic on endurance track racing and training.
Registration is $35 for one clinic or $55 for both.

Track Racing 101
Pursuit
This event covers four kilometers for men, three for women. Two riders start exactly opposite from each other on the track and literally chase or "pursue" each other around the track. A rider can win the race in one of two ways: by either catching his opponent or by recording the faster time. Times are posted when a rider reaches each half lap. The best riders follow a "schedule", generally announced track-side by their coach. The event may be run with riders qualifying through heats to a final round or as a time trial in which the rider recording the fastest time overall is declared the winner.

What to watch for: This race tests endurance and pacing of the rider's maximum effort. Watch for a rider to start out slowly, lulling their opponent into a false sense of security, and then come on strong at the end. Some riders will start out fast in an attempt to rattle their opponent and break their confidence, perhaps catching them. Training for this event consists of specialized track training as well as road training. Road racers cross over to this event very well.
