Ten teams entered the 80-lap 2009 Madison State Championship race, the largest Madison in recent memory. The teams began smoothly, conducting controlled exchanges in an intact pace line. With 14 to go to the first sprint the attacks began. Crosby/Kruse gained 100 meters and took the first sprint followed by Bergman/Sedgewick, Ferris/Schueller, and Dubay/Atherton. Shortly after Crosby/Kruse lapped the field.
After 30 laps, 8 teams including Crosby/Kruse were all 1 lap up. With 8 laps to the sprint, Dubay/Schueller attacked, dropping 2 of those teams. Crosby attacked the group with 2 to go to the sprint and drew Bergman/Sedgewick and Ferris/Schueller. Crosby/Kruse took the sprint, followed by Ferris/Schueller, Bergman/Sedgewick, and Dubay/Atherton. On the next lap, Ben Dubay got squeezed between two teams and had to leave the race briefly to replace a wheel damaged in the collision but was back in the race within 3 laps.
A large group contested the 3rd sprint. With 2 to go, Hagerty/Hall attacked. At the bell it was Dubay/Atherton, Hagerty/Hall, Winger/Goldberg, and Schmeichel/Allen. Bergman/Sedgewick accelerated in the final meters and caught all but Dubay/Atherton. Hagerty/Hall took 3rd and Crosby/Kruse took 4th.
The group stayed bunched until 13 to go when Crosby/Kruse, Bergman/Sedgewick, and Ferris/Schueller gained 60 meters. Dubay/Atherton and Winger/Goldberg pursued the lead three. Crosby/Kruse built up a lead of 40 meters over the others and, at the final sprint, Crosby/Kruse edged the rapidly closing Bergman/Sedgewick, Dubay/Atherton, and Ferris/Schueller. The final results showed Brian Crosby and Andy Kruse the 2009 State Madison Champions with 2 laps on the field. Adam Bergman and Dale Sedgewick took 2nd with 1 lap. 3rd place went to Ben Dubay and Alex Atherton on sprint points.
Brosnahan Takes Category 4/5 State Championship Scratch RaceThe final race of the evening was the 2009 Minnesota State Championship Scratch Race for the 4/5s; 40 laps contested by 17 riders. The race started at a moderate to high pace but held together for 12 laps at which point Sean Vig (unattached), Bergstrom, and Hall took a 20 meter lead chased by Cimino and Brosnahan. Three laps later the lead evaporated. A handful of brief attempts to get away were nullified. At the bell, Brennaman and Brosnahan bolted setting off the final sprint. Brosnahan stayed out, nosing out a charging Cimino. Derek Virta (Gopher Wheelmen) came through for 3rd and Brennaman held on for 4th.
