Men's Category 1/2
The Cat 1/2 riders began the evening with a 15-lap scratch race. After 5 laps, Ben Dubay (Speedfix) attacked, taking James Tainter (Silver Cycling) along. The two never got more than 30 meters before being reeled in by the field led by Dan Schueller (Gopher Wheelmen). Brian Crosby (Speedfix) then countered with Gabe Masiulis (Gopher Wheelmen), newly upgraded to Cat 2. Dan Casper (Grandstay) and Tainter bridged up, making it a foursome. With 4 to go they had a 40-meter lead which held to the finish line. With 3 to go Tainter upped the speed, shelling Masiulis off the back. In the last lap Tainter rode around Crosby then Casper to take the win. Crosby also rode around Casper for 2nd . Ben Dubay brought the rest in for 4th place. The 2009 Minnesota State Championship Keirin held tonight was open to Cat 1/2 and interested Cat 3 riders. Twenty seven riders competed in four heats to put 8 riders into the final. Alex Atherton (Flat City) took the pole position in the final. When the motor went off he kept the lead for a lap with Tom Hagerty (Behind Bars/LGR) close on his wheel. Behind in the pack, there was jostling for position with Crosby, in the lead for Track Rider of the Year, boxed in and unable to get out and around at the critical moment. With 1½ laps to go, Atherton swung up and Hagerty blew through to take the lead. He never gave it up and crossed the line the 2009 Keirin champion. Atherton was able to latch on to Ben Dubay (Speedfix) to take 3rd with Crosby managing 4th. Featured RaceKen Woods Memorial Madison Sponsored By Flanders Cycle
The $500 Ken Woods Memorial Madison sponsored by Flanders Cycle
featured nine teams. The race was 80 laps with sprints every 20 laps.
After organizing the race during the first few laps, Crosby/Casper rode
off the front followed by Masiulis/Bergstrom and Atherton/Schueller.
These three teams got a quick 60 meter gap and with 65 laps to go,
Crosby/Casper and Atherton/Schueller each took a lap with
Masiulis/Bergstrom slowly falling back to the field. Crosby/Casper
attacked again and took the first sprint over Masiulis/Bergstrom. At
this point the race broke up into a relative free-for-all. At the end,
Crosby/Casper dominated, taking 4 laps on the field and first in all of
the sprints. The lap that Atherton/Schueller took early placed them
second for the race with few sprint points. Masiulis/Bergstrom sprinted
well and took sufficient points for 3rd place and a $100 prime 30 laps
into the race. Schaeffer/Mehus also sprinted well and took 4th place. Click here for the race results Click here for highlight videos |
Rider Profile
Dan Casper Dan Casper is on fire! After only a year and a half of racing the track, the Minneapolis Fire Captain has reached the Category 1/2 field and won a major victory tonight in the Ken Woods Madison. The experienced road racer has taken to the track quickly and particularly enjoys the endurance events that allow his road training to sap the legs of the speedsters. Dan began his athletic endeavors as a runner, but switched to cycling after 26 years of pavement pounding took a toll on his body. He still goes back to his roots each winter, though, competing in skyscraper staircase running events. Dan claims it's good cross-training for fire fighting! He's also an avowed dancer, noting "...if the music's right, I like to shake a leg." Just don't bother making fun of him - life in a fire house has made him impervious to mocking. Watch for Dan in the green, white and orange of Grandstay in the Cat 1/2 field. |
Track Racing 101: Gearing Revealed
Our own Dan Cullen (with an assist from 2008 TROY Brian Crosby) shares his insights on track gearing. As Dan notes, bigger is not always better: Track racers invariably use much smaller gears (and therefore, pedal at much higher cadences) than their peers on the road. When Tom Boonen winds up a sprint on the road, he is in a 53 x 11 or 53 x 12, which yield 126" and 116" gears, respectively. If his sprint tops out at 60kph (37mph), his cadence will max out at either 100 rpm's exactly (in the 53 x 11), or 109 rpm's (in the 53 x 12). By comparison, elite track racers commonly hit 60kph, but would never use a gear larger than 50 x 14 (94"), and more likely would be riding a 49 x 14 (92") or 51 x 15 (90"). So, at 60kph, their cadence is between 134rpms (50 x 14) and 141rpms (51 x 15). To put this in road terms, for an elite track race - say, the World Points Race Championship - the world's top riders will do the entire race in a gear just a little bit smaller than a 53 x 15. That's a pretty big difference in approach. A road racer would never limit himself to a maximum of a 53 x 15 - but that's what the top track racers do.
