July 16, 2009 -- State Championship Scratch Races
Men
The Cat 1/2/3 State Championship Scratch Race was contested by 23 riders. With this field size, riders lapped off the back were dropped from the race. That many riders filled up the track! Dan Casper tested the others with a brief attack but was reeled in by Brian Crosby and James Tainter. Brandon Krawczyk and Spencer Haugh were the next to try followed by Gabe Masiulis . They were reeled in by Adam Bergman . With 53 laps to go Crosby made the first serious attack gaining 50 meters on the field inside two laps, The remaining riders kept a sharp eye on him and let him hang out there for 10 laps getting as much as 90 meters. Crosby finally gave it up with 42 laps to go.
Several brief attacks were then launched by Pat Lemieux and Andy Kruse which were neutralized. With 35 laps to go Bergman attacked shadowed by Crosby. The pair got as much as 95 meters on the field at which point Casper and Tainter rode off to bridge and everything was back together with 29 laps to go. Krawczyk and Haugh then gave it a go again and got as much as 40 meters. Haugh couldn't keep up the pace and Krawczyk gave it up a lap later. With 23 laps to go, all but 11 riders had been pulled from the high paced race. With 17 to go Casper rode off the front chased by Crosby. The pair got 60 meters but Bergman led the field back to them with 12 to go. The field remained together to the final sprint. Casper led the sprint out with 2 to go. Kruse attacked over him followed by Bergman and Crosby. It was Bergman/Crosby all the way to the line. The judges gave it to Bergman but the gap was no more than a tire width. Kruse held on for 3rd with Dan Currell outsprinting the remaining racers for 4th. Adam Bergman - State Champion Scratch Race winner.
Women
The 2009 Women's State Championship Scratch Race was contested over 40 laps by eleven riders. The race went off at a moderate pace for 7 laps then bunched up and reshuffled. The rest of the race was marked by as many as 5 attempts by riders to get off the front but all were to no avail. With 9 laps to go, Melissa Dahlmann and Terra James rode off the front and got as much as 25 meters on the others but were caught and, with 3 laps to go the group was bunched. With 2 laps to go, Bianca Bergman accelerated. This triggered an attack by Melissa Dahlmann with Elena Dorr following. Heidi Dahlmann then made her move and rode over Bergman and Dorr but couldn't catch sister Melissa. The final result: Melissa-Heidi-Dorr with Linda Sone coming through for 4th. Track Racing 101: Miss and Out
The Miss and Out or "Devil take the hindmost" is an elimination race in which the last rider across the finish line every other lap is withdrawn from the race. The tension builds lap after lap as the riders fight for position at the back of the pack. One by one the field is whittled down to the final three riders who then sprint for first second and third place. What to watch for: Watch for crowding at the rear of the pack as riders attempt to move forward to avoid elimination at the line. Some riders will purposely ride at the back to "play the devil" by sprinting at the last second to pass the other riders. Later in the race, the field is smaller but often more tired and the ability to sprint fast is important. Watch last week's Women's Miss & Out. |
