Rockford Raptors beat by Tottenham's heat,
but keeping their cool

"Now, there's no snow in the forecast, is there?" joked Vicky Zamora yesterday morning. She was bundled up in the stadium bleachers to watch her son play for the Rockford Raptors as they took on the Tottenham Hotspur Academy in unusually cool weather.

The matchup was the opening game of the vElite tournament for U16 boys. Raptors coach Paul Roe said the boys were interested in the opportunity to play in the vElite, but at first "they weren't really sure what it meant." When they got here, he said, it sank in.

Playing Tottenham on the stadium field was a highlight for the team. "It's pretty awesome playing in the stadium," said Raptors player James Kim. But the British team took the Raptors by surprise. "The level of play is so much faster than we were expecting," Kim said.

It was the first time the team has played an international opponent, said teammate Kynan Obee. In addition, the Raptors at the tournament represent a combination of their U15 and U16 teams. Kim said the boys practiced together to get ready for the tournament and have a good chemistry. "It's the best team possible we could bring. It's great; everyone's friends."

Raptors coach Paul Roe wanted to combine the U15 and U16 teams because he felt there were stronger players across the two age groups. "The fifteens are actually off to US Club Soccer Nationals next week," Roe said. The USA CUP comes at the end of the team's spring season, and they would usually be taking some time off now, Roe said, but "you can't turn down opportunities like this."

Although they want to be competitive and win if they can, the boys are keeping a fairly relaxed schedule during the tournament, with maybe one or two light training sessions between games, Roe said. The Raptors will keep the weekend low key off tournament grounds as well. Their parents said they don't have any real plans around town, but the boys would probably head to the Athlete Party later.

With just a five hour drive to Rockford, Ill., Minnesota is not a new destination for the team. Robinson said the boys play occasional games in the state because they compete in the US Youth Soccer Midwest Regional League.

Playing an English team was new, though. "It's a pleasure to play Tottenham," Roe said after the game. "It was exciting." An Englishman himself, Roe felt the cool, wet day was in Tottenham's favor. "This is nice British weather that you put on for them," he said, laughing. Coming from steamy Illinois, he was a little unprepared. "Well, I didn't bring any track suits."

Down 0-3 at the half, the Raptors eventually lost 0-4. Lori Robinson, another Raptor mom, expected the play to pick up in the Raptors' next game. The team often starts slow, but she said they tend to get better as the day goes on. "I know our fifteens get nervous before big games," she said.

The loss didn't seem to faze the boys. Asked if they are having a good time at the tournament, Kim, Obee and teammate Tom Fluegel gave a unanimous "yes."
The Rockford Raptors tied their evening game against the Brooklyn Italians, 1-1. The Raptors take on TSF Academy today in their final pool play game at 10:40 on field U2.
Tottenham Hotspur Academy put forth a strong effort yesterday and ended with a 1-0-1 record for their two pool play games. "We've played very, very well," said Tottenham coach Chris Ramsey.

The Spurs arrived in the Twin Cities Monday and have been training each day since Tuesday for the tournament. "This is the developmental part of our season," Ramsey said. The boys are part of a training program, not a club team, so some of them will not move on next season, he added.

The rest of the weekend will be lighter for Tottenham, with no training, just games. "The boys are still jet-lagged, really," Ramsey said. But it has not been all work for the team. Wednesday night they took the opportunity to go out for a movie. Though it was the release date for Harry Potter: The Half-Blood Prince, the team did not go see the popular British-based film. "It was too long. We couldn't have kept them in their seats," Ramsey said. The coaches planned to relax a little, too. "Some of our coaches are going out on the town tonight in downtown Minneapolis," Ramsey said.

As for the experience at USA CUP, Ramsey said everyone has been welcoming. "We've enjoyed the tournament. It's been very well organized," he said. "So far, so good."
Innovative new media helps USA CUP connect with customers

25th Anniversary Video
The first episode of the "Schwan's USA CUP: Celebrating 25 Years" video history series was released on the USA CUP website just days before this year's tournament, and more episodes are on their way. The roughly seven-minute video segment, titled "The Early Years," incorporates past video footage of the tournament, vintage photos and interviews that capture the original spirit of the tournament and its incredible growth over the past 25 years.

"Viewers will notice there's no narrator, no voice-overs. We use only the voices of the people who've lived USA CUP and helped to build it to the place it is today," said the film's executive producer and chief communication officer for the National Sports Center, Barclay Kruse.

Jake Frantzen, marketing assistant, and Eric Swanson, video intern, crafted the episode from dozens of hours of raw footage. They plan to create several more episodes to round out the series and hope to have them all finished by the end of July. All episodes will be available for viewing at www.usacup.org.

Back AgainNSC webcast logo
For a second year, the NSC will provide live audio and video web broadcasts of games played on fields U1 and U2 at NSCwebcast.tv. The Olympic-style opening ceremonies on Tuesday, July 21 will also be broadcast. Games and the ceremonies will be available on a pay-per-view basis for $6.95 each. The games will also be archived and available on a flash drive for $25.

PUMA's Total Club Concept scores important goals at USA CUP
By Marie DeMars; photo by staff photographer Taylor Kruse

PUMA's Total Club Concept (TCC) is a soccer program designed to build partnerships with elite club teams across the United States, and it's bringing some tough competition to Schwan's USA CUP.

Using the PUMA vElite tournament as a platform, PUMA will host a separate TCC event alongside its many other activities at this weekend's tournament.

At the TCC event, select clubs will have access to tools and tips to help their clubs grow, develop and network with other clubs around the country. The event will involve the coaches from the eight vElite teams in addition to 18 other coaches. Besides presentations and discussion, PUMA will host an invitation-only clinic with Chris Ramsey, assistant academy manager and head of player development for the Tottenham Hotspur Academy.

Tara McRae, senior director of sports marketing for PUMA North America, says the benefits for clubs in this program are many. "As a TCC Partner, puma assists with club tournaments by creating custom packages to brand their event. On-field, clubs are outfitted in our season's best soccer performance kits," McRae said in an e-mail. In addition, clubs have access to events like the one being held this weekend at USA CUP.

For Schwan's USA CUP, TCC means a chance to raise the bar on competition and attract elite teams from more locations. "It's great for us. It gives us new clubs who have never been here before," said USA CUP director Teri Vogt. At the TCC event this weekend, she will have the opportunity to promote the tournament and invite more top-level PUMA teams to participate in USA CUP next year.

The experience is a better sell than any brochure because USA CUP is something you have to see to believe. "It's so different from any other tournament you attend you can't imagine it. It seems like it just can't be real," Vogt said. In turn, the vElite teams PUMA helped recruit enhance the USA CUP experience. "There is definitely a buzz at the tournament about the vElite," Vogt said.

But the improvement in competition is not just in the U16 boys vElite tournament. "Clubs that were here last year with vElite are sending teams this year in different age groups," Vogt said.

PUMA enjoys benefits from the partnership, too. "USA CUP served as a great opportunity for us to bring our TCC partners to share more about what our brand can do in soccer," McRae said. "It also serves as a great competition for our clubs, and opportunity to see the brand in another light."

Plans are already underway for the 2010 vElite tournament, but next year's teams won't be able to get in with an invitation: they will have to qualify. The teams in the 2010 vElite tournament will be champions of other select puma tournaments prior to USA CUP. The teams are not required to belong to TCC clubs.
