July 9, 2009 -- RAIN!
Track Stand PhotoThe evening started on a high note as Colton Barrett returned wearing his National Champion's Stars & Stripes jersey. The previous weekend, Colton had won the USA men's 17-18 national match sprint championship in Los Angeles. He also joined Dan Casper as newly-upgraded Category 2 riders.

Unfortunately, for the first time this season, racing was halted due to rain in the middle of the 2nd women's race last Thursday.  During the rain delay, about a dozen hardy riders mounted the boards for a track stand contest.  After some questionable tactics by Skibby (hanging onto the rail), Jason Lardy (leaning on Brian Crosby) and Gabe Masiulis (U-turn at the line), a trio of strongmen battled for nearly 5 minutes.  Chris Ferris danced on the edge, but eventually rolled over the line for 3rd.  Chris Verbick and Brian Crosby withstood each other's icy stares and the taunts from the infield for over 5 minutes before Verbick succumbed to the pressure. Crosby enjoyed the cheers of the crowd and the $20 prize money, proving he's not just an endurance rider.

The women were able to finish their delayed race before the rain returned, this time for good.  Shortly after the 5 remaining laps were completed, the skies opened, sending the crowd home and postponing the $500 Ken Woods Memorial Madison sponsored by Flanders Cycle.  That event has been re-scheduled for July 23.

Lauren's Training Advice - Re-locating a dislocated shoulder
OSI LogoIn honor of the Madison...

The most common way to dislocate your shoulder is an anterior dislocation. This usually occurs when the arm is externally rotated and slightly abducted....Madison arm position.  Initially, the body releases a rush of endorphins to help with pain, but these wear off quickly and intense pain will set in until relocated. If you are alone (or without Linsey) when this happens, one of the common ways of relocating is to sit on the ground with knees bent, lace fingers together  around  the same side knee, and lean back slowly.  This places traction on the arm and with the light pull can help pop it back in place.  Of course, the best option is to have a specialist aid in the process, especially since there will be an increase in pain in the relocation process until it is reduced.  For your curiosity, here is a link of many other ways to relocated a shoulder :  http://www.shoulderdoc.co.uk/article.asp?article=1267

Take a look at the technique called the Eskimo. If pain persists after relocation there may be injury to the capsule, labrum, or rotator cuff, which should be looked at by the proper medical professional.  An interesting finding the master riders may enjoy is studies show that if your first dislocation occurs before age 20, reoccurrence rate is 80-90% where as this rate drops to 10-15% after age 40.
Track Racing 101: Prime (pronounced "preem")
A prize given to a rider who wins a sprint during a race. This is not the finish. The race continues after the prime sprint. Money for a "crowd prime" is collected from the spectators. Crowd primes are particularly popular with racers.
