Thursday Night Lights Results
July 2, 2009
How could it get any better? Temperatures in the high 70's, low humidity, clear skies. Over 230 spectators took advantage of the beautiful weather to watch fifty five racers go for the glory. Here's a recap of the Category 1/2 events:
The Adam Bergman (Texas Roadhouse) - Brian Crosby (Speedfix) rivalry was renewed tonight to the delight of the spectators. In the opening 10-lap scratch race fifteen riders opened tentatively but were led at high speed by Tom Hagerty (Behind Bars/LGR), Dan Schueller (Gopher Wheelmen), and Pat Lemieux (Texas Roadhouse). With 3 laps to go Bergman and Crosby went out expecting to contest the finish. They misjudged Dan Currell (Bianchi/GP) and Andy Frye (Loon State), though, who blow through underneath. Crosby jumped soon enough to catch Frye but not Currell. The finish: Currell-Crosby-Frye-Andy Kruse (Speedfix).
Schueller stretched the Miss and Out from the gun. After 6 riders were squeezed inside, Lemieux rode off the front followed by Crosby. They gained up to 60 meters as more riders faded. Currell took 4th, unable to match Bergman's surge. At the same time, Crosby attacked Lemieux who couldn't respond. Due to the large gaps between the three riders, the officials stopped the race early, the finish order: Crosby-Lemieux-Bergman-Currell. Click here for the complete race report.

Sponsored Race Feature: Penn Cycle Points Race
Kevin Schaeffer (Loon State) launched at the gun of the Penn Cycle Points Race but was reeled back after two laps off the front. The pace remained moderate until Spencer Haugh (Behind Bars/LGR) upped the pace with 2 laps to the 1st sprint. Crosby and teammate Kruse attacked for the top points. Crosby kept it hot and Bergman bridged to him.
The pair gained distance on the pack every lap. Crosby won the second sprint over Bergman but immediately unclipped his left pedal. He was allowed to put on a borrowed shoe and rejoin the race. Meanwhile, Bergman lapped the field with 55 laps to go. As Crosby was even with Bergman when his clip broke, he was awarded the lap too. At the third sprint, Bergman and Lemieux took the top spots with Crosby and Kruse mopping up the points. These four went off the front and, with one lap to go to the 4th sprint they all gained a lap. Bergman took the bunch sprint over Hagerty, Frye, and Kruse. Things slowed down after the sprint and, with 38 laps to go, Schaeffer launched a flyer. The bunch let him dangle in front for 6 laps gaining as much as 110 meters. Currell led the bunch back and, at the 5th sprint bell, Crosby, Bergman and Frye attacked going over the line in that order with Currell bringing the rest across.
Three laps in front of the 6th sprint, Lemieux tried to get away, again without success, and was over-ridden by Bergman, Crosby, Schueller and Schweich for the sprint points. It was then Schueller who tried to get away keeping it hot after the sprint. He took the 7th sprint by 60 meters over Bergman, Crosby, and Kruse, and, with 9 laps to go got the lap. Kruse got his second lap with 7 to go. Bergman led Crosby by one sprint point so the final sprint would be decisive for the race. They rode off the front and focused their attention on each other. While sparring with each other, the pair yo-yoed back and forth off the front of the field losing the lead at least once. With 2 laps to go, they were 50 meters ahead of the field, still looking at each other. By the final bell, Ferris and Lemieux had bridged to them. Bergman led out the sprint but Crosby and then Ferris came over him to cross the line in front of him. The final race result was Crosby for the win over Bergman then Kruse and Schueller 4th over Lemieux on sprint points. |
Colton Barrett Earns His Stripes (and Stars)
NSC Velodrome junior racer Colton Barrett claimed the Stars & Stripes jersey with his win in the Match Sprint competition at the US Junior National Championships last weekend in Los Angeles. In addition to his thrilling sprint win, the accomplished distance racer also earned top ten finishes in the Points Race (4th), Scratch Race (8th) and Pursuit (8th). Watch for Colton mixing it up this week in his Stars and Stripes jersey.

Track Racing 101: Unknown Distance
A scratch race in which the number of laps is known only by the chief official. Riders try to second guess the official as to when the race will finish. The gun is fired at 1 1/2 laps from the finish to signal the distance is about to be completed.
What to watch for: Look for riders to "take a flyer" with the gamble that the race will end while they are away from the pack or that they can get themselves into the proper position from which to sprint, at the time the race nears its end. It's anybody's guess! | |
