Thursday Night Lights Results
June 18, 2009
Despite the threat of rain over 170 spectators showed up on a warm muggy evening to watch forty three racers compete at the NSC velodrome in Blaine.  PENN Cycle was on-hand showing off their latest bikes and accessories.  The evening also marked the debut of the exclusive Speed Demon T-shirt designed by Twin Six.

Category 1/2
Brian Crosby (Speedfix), last year's Track Rider of the Year, dominated the Cat 1/2 races this week. The riders who have given him the most competition this year were off to other races and Crosby rode strong and smart to win the evening.
Eleven Cat 1/2 riders started off with a 15-lap scratch race. The race went off at a brisk pace, initially set by Tom Hagerty (Behind Bars/LGR). The group bunched with 11 to go when Crosby attacked taking Peter Schweich (Behind Bars/LGR) with him. The rest of the riders weren't about to let them get away but Crosby attacked again just after he and Schweich were caught, and no one responded. Crosby gained a 40 meter gap with 7 laps to go when Dan Schueller (Gopher Wheelmen) and Andy Frye (Loon State) tried to bridge to him.  With 2 laps to go Crosby's 120 meter lead was insurmountable and he eased off. Meanwhile Schueller upped the pace again but Andy Kruse (Speedfix) and Chris Smith (Hup United) came over him in the last lap to take 2nd and 3rd to Schueller's 4th.

The Cat 1/2 miss and out went out fast and stayed fast. Early riders were eliminated by being boxed in low on the track but riders also faded off the back to be eliminated. Smith faded off the pace to take 4th. Dan Currell (Bianchi/GP) was nipped by Schweich and Crosby. Crosby gained a 40 meter gap after which Schweich conceded in the last lap.

Sponsored Race Feature: Penn Cycle Points Race
Penn Cycle LogoThe Cat 1/2 riders finished off the evening with a 60-lap points race, the third in the season-long PENN Cycle Points Race series. At the gun, Mike Pederson (Hup United) took off followed by Crosby. Haggerty and Schueller bridged but the pace was too much for Pederson who faded back to the bunch. Chris Ferris (sub/11) then set off to bridge with Currell and Smith following. Two laps to the first sprint the six had a 50 meter gap on the rest. At the bell Smith attacked followed by Crosby who came over him for 1st. Schueller and Currell mopped up the remaining points. Crosby, Smith and Schueller kept going and got a 180 meter gap with 44 laps to go. Andy Kruse (Speedfix) and Frye took off to bridge. Frye faded and Kruse took 4th in the second sprint behind Crosby, Smith, and Schueller. Shortly after the sprint the three leaders got their lap on the field for an additional 20 points each.  With 2 laps to the third sprint, the leaders slowed down, jostling for position in the sprint. At the bell, Schueller led out but Crosby, Kruse, and Currell went over him in the last turn. The lead 5 got a gap as large as 150 meters but slowed down again before the fourth sprint, jockeying for position. Smith attacked at the bell taking Crosby who went over him to take the sprint; Currell and Kruse coming after. Crosby and Schueller then road off the front and the race started to splinter. After gaining 180 meters, Crosby attacked and Schueller couldn't answer. Eventually, Crosby took a second lap with 8 laps to go. A field of 8 riders formed with 6 laps to go. With 3 to go, Schueller rode to a 20 meter gap but Crosby and Smith bridged and went over him in the last lap. The final result was never in question, Crosby took first in all of the sprints and was awarded 40 additional points for 2 laps. Smith came in second in the race with one lap and 15 sprint points. Schueller was 3rd with one lap and 6 sprint points. Kruse was 4th with ten sprint points.  As always, we thank PENN Cycle  for sponsoring this season-long series.
Rider Profile: Eric Ware
Eric Ware PhotoEric Ware has a legitimate claim to the title of "Fastest Cyclist" at the NSC Velodrome. He has powered his fully-enclosed recumbent Human Powered Vehicle up to 50.5 mph on a flat road. An avid fan of HPVs, Eric is currently developing a machine capable of 55+ mph on a flat road.

Not afraid of more upright bikes, Eric has been racing since age 16. He's been racing the track for the last 4 years. In 2007, at age 46, he won the Cat 4 MN State Championship 40 lap scratch race with a well-timed attack in the final 2 laps. A year later, he narrowly avoided the big crash in the 2008 version of that race, barreling through the infield and successfully re-joining the pack on his way to a bronze medal.

Eric is a founding member of the MN Cycling Team. His long racing career is a testament to his will - he has battled asthma since he was one year old. The condition sometimes makes racing challenging, but as he did in the 2007 State Championship race, Eric is able to manage it and remain competitive.

Track Racing 101: Team Pursuit
The Team Pursuit is similar to the Individual Pursuit, except that each team consists of four riders. The racers ride single file, known as a "pace line", and take turns leading the team around the track. At each turn the lead rider moves up the embankment to slow down, allowing the other three riders to pass underneath, and then drops down the track to the back of the "pace line". The lead rider is responsible for setting the pace while the other cyclists work inside the draft to keep their speed while recovering. The winner is determined by the time recorded when the third member of the team crosses the finish line. A team is considered caught, when the third member of one team is passed by the third member of the opposing team.

What to watch for: See that the start is fast and efficient, allowing all riders to get into position behind the leader quickly without extra effort. A smooth steady pace is important as the following riders must ride close to the rider in front for maximum draft and recovery. Precision bike handling is critical when dropping back onto the pace line.
