Sponsored Race Feature: Queen of the Sprints
Women SprintersThe Women's Scratch Race season series is joined this year by the Queen of the Sprints competition in showcasing the talent in our rapidly-growing women's peloton. The Queen of the Sprints series will feature 8 races throughout the summer.  An especially exciting part of this series is the first-ever set of women's keirin races.

Many of our women racers are known for their endurance. The Queen of the Sprints competition gives them a chance to show off their speed and guts. Watch out for some all-out drag racing this summer!
Rider Profile: Pat Whelan
Whelan PhotoPat is one of our elder statesmen. He's been racing the track for several years, but he's a "late bloomer" on the local racing scene. Pat bought his first bike at age 40 and didn't start racing until he was 57! He's always been a little non-traditional, though. He makes good use of his English degree from the University of Minnesota in his day-job: owner of PJW Automotive.

Pat has mixed it up in the Cat 4 peloton for the last few years. Last year, Pat saved himself for his last race night, finishing 5th in the first 2 events of the night. Unfortunately, as Pat was positioning himself for a strong finish in the State Championship Scratch Race, he was brought down in turn 3 by a crash ahead of him.The incident ended his season and sent him to the hospital with a broken collarbone.

This year, aided by some great racing experience in Australia, Pat has upgraded to Cat 3. He's been training hard and intends to blow past the Masters 60+ Flying 200 record that has stood untouched for 15 years. Pat rides for the Gopher Wheelmen. Keep your eyes on his orange and blue - and his unique Teschner ride.

Track racing 101 - Track Rider of the Year Scoring
Each year, the top-ranked woman and man at the NSC Velodrome are awarded the Track Rider of the Year award. Watch for these riders wearing the yellow #1 all season long.  The TROY competition tallies points from each night of racing.  It's a test of skill, speed and perseverance. Points are awarded as follows:

The top 6 finishers in each Thursday Night Lights race will receive points, with 6 points for first place and 1 point for 6th.  For fields less than 12, half the finishers will be awarded points with odd-numbered fields being rounded up to the next even number. A racer's best 30 races will be tallied for his or her TROY standings.

The TROY competition is open to all Cat 1/2 men and women in all categories. Cat 3 men may earn TROY points if they race in a Cat 1/2 event. Madison team members each receive full points for their finishing place.
