Thursday Night Lights: Racing Starts in 5 Weeks!
May 21st is opening night and we're anxious to roll 'em off. Training has started and the velodrome is open from 4 pm - dark during the week and from 11 am - 3 pm on Saturdays. The May training class still has a couple of open slots, so now's your chance to learn to ride the hardwood. Check out the website www.nscsports.org/velo for all the details.

Aspiring new racers can also learn more about the sport at the MN Cycling Federation's new website www.startbikeracing.com. You'll find lots of great training info, details about equipment, skills and much more there.

Check it out and join the peloton!

Sponsored Race Feature: PENN Cycle Points Race
The PENN Cycle Points Race is back for 2009!  Last year's series featured some exciting racing capped by Brian Crosby's consistently strong effort.  He totaled 18 points with 3 wins in four starts. Second place went to Tim Mulrooney with 11 points. Third place was won by the evergreen Doug Regester who broke a tie with Joe Johnson at 7 points by putting a check in the win column.

The PENN Cycle Points race series encompasses six events throughout the Thursday Night Lights racing series.  It is open to Cat 1/2/3 racers and includes the State Championship Points Race.  PENN Cycle will again be providing prizes for individual race winners and the series winner this season.  Last summer, PENN Cycle opened a new store across 105th Street from the NSC.  Stop by before our Thursday Night Lights events.  PENN Cycle will also be on-site at the Velodrome June 4 and July 30th demoing the latest goodies.

Check out Penn Cycle at www.penncycle.com.
Rider Profile: Terra James
The new Speedfix racer enjoyed an educational rookie season in 2008. She even survived her first crash which she overcame, getting back in the race just a lap later! This and other race experiences helped her accomplish her goal of learning the sport and building her skills on the track. She counts locking herself in one of the velodrome's storage trailers with her iPod as one of her best Velodrome memories! Here's hoping her 2009 campaign brings her some better memories.

Terra credits her older brothers for her love of cycling. She spends her days working as an accounting manager and is a graduate of White Bear Lake High School. Go Bears! She's a true endurance sport enthusiast and is preparing to add adventure races and ultimate frisbee to her list of sport pursuits. Watch for her in the gray, blue and red of the Speedfix team this summer.
Track racing 101 - Scratch Race
The points race may seem confusing at first glance, but it can be one of the most fun events to watch. Essentially, riders cover distances of 10-40 km, and the rider who accumulates the most points, wins the race. Points are awarded during sprints every 8-10 laps. The first four finishers in these sprints are awarded 5,3,2 and 1 points respectively. If a rider laps the field, he or she is awarded 20 points. Any rider that loses a lap on the field has 20 points deducted from his/ her total.

What to watch for: Watch for riders to position themselves before unleashing their sprint in attempting to gain points. Riders will attack off the front in an attempt to lap the field alone or with other competitors. Lap cards are turned based on the leading rider. As a rider or riders gain a lap on the field, the lap cards are turned based on the next leading rider on the track. Sprint points are awarded, starting with the leader on the track at the time when the bell is rung.
