Schwan's USA CUP Super Volunteers
|
Schwan's USA CUP has a handful of staff and 1000 volunteers.
Being a part of USA CUP is a very special experience for many of those dedicated volunteers.
Bev and Tom Menk
are an example of a family that totally immerse themselves during USA CUP.The Menks are parents of five children and ten grandchildren yet are like the Energizer bunny! They are often going from one
grandchild's game to another during USA CUP or watching the teams from Alaska
compete, because Tom, who was retired, now works in Alaska (retirement was too boring).
Their numerous volunteer duties start long before the tournament. They serve on the USA CUP Steering Committee, a group of volunteers that
work all year on USA CUP.The Menks then start their role as ambassadors at final
team check-in for USA CUP Weekend and continue through USA CUP Week
check-in. They direct coaches and team
managers to the many stations checking in the teams and visit with the coaches. They make time to talk with everyone. When it
gets a little crazy, they hand out Schwan's ice cream, which makes them very popular.
Their next role is as party greeters. During both tournaments there is a coaches party or reception during a Thunder game. The Menks will greet
the guests, help out with the food and drinks and most important talk with the
guests to make sure they are having a great time at the tournament.
Once the week-long tournament starts the Menks are hosts in
the VIP area, where coaches come to relax, have a soda, snack or
ice cream and catch up on their email. It is their mission to make sure every one
has a wonderful experience at USA CUP.The Menks finally finish the tournament handing out championship
medals. What a great way to end the week!
Bev describes the week as if "we are on vacation." She continues, "where else can you go on vacation and have a
reunion of friends from around the world, some we don't even know their name,
but we have visited with every year for the last 10 years? We go to all the
parties and socialize with the VIP's. To top it off we get to sleep
in our own bed."
USA CUP loves our volunteers, we are all family. Stop into the VIP area in July and say hello to Bev and Tom. | |

totally unknown to us at the National Sports Center, who you think would be a
great fit to participate in our tournaments? Drop an email to Cliniton LeBeau at clabeau@nscsports.org with some contact
info and maybe they can be a great addition to this year's 25th
Anniversary celebration. |
