Thursday Night Lights Results
The 2008 Thursday Night Lights series showcased tough competition in all categories.  Fields were up this past year with the Category 1/2 field averaging 14 and the women's field topping out at 11 on a number of occasions. Sponsored series added new punch to the season. The Salsa King of the Sprint, County Cycles Scratch Races and the Penn Cycle Points Races each provided extra incentive throughout the summer.

Brian Crosby won his second consecutive Track Rider of the Year award in '08 through his consistent performance. Melissa Dahlmann took the Women's Track Rider of the Year trophy.  It was a tough victory with the outcome not decided until season's end.

Rider Profile: Brian Crosby - 2008 Men's Track Rider of the Year
Brian Crosby PhotoIn 2008, Brian Crosby earned his second consecutive Track Rider of the Year Award (TROY) in just his 5th year of racing.  His strong 2008 palmares also includes: State Points Race Champion, State Scratch Race Champion, and Penn Cycle Points Race Series Champion. In 2007, he raced in the International Velodrome Union's (UIV) talent series. Over 3 months of racing, he faced some of the world's best emerging track cycling talents in 6-Day races in Switzerland and Germany.

Crosby's fondest moment at the NSC Velodrome was winning the Nationals Qualification scratch race on his first night as a category 2 rider. He remembers another moment with a shiver: racing the Madison with Chris Ferris. "Chris threw me so hard my rear wheel lifted off the track for a few meters!" Crosby recalls.

Currently Crosby studies physics at the University of Minnesota. He grew up in Arden Hills and attended Mounds View High School.  He races for SPEEDFIX Racing Team, sponsored by Cane Creek, One on One, Tiemeyer, PJW Auto, Motortabs, Tufo North America, Time Sport USA, and Zubaz.
Ferris dominates Salsa King of the Sprint - Again
In 2008, Chris Ferris proved again that he is the most consistent sprinter at the NSC Velodrome. Ferris has made the Salsa King of the Sprint series his own, winning every trophy the track has offered. This season, he won 5 out of 6 events that he entered earning 27 points with the next closest man being Brian Crosby with 12 points. There are other riders who can give Ferris a run for his money but so far they have not been consistent enough to topple him from his throne. Chris welcomes the competition and the title will be up for grabs again this season.

Track racing 101 - Keirin The Keirin is a massed start sprint event of 2 km (8 laps) in length. During the first 5 1/2 laps the riders are paced by a "pacer" or motorcycle. Keirin races are extremely popular in Japan, where they are the object of heavy legalized gambling.

What to watch for: All the riders have the advantage of drafting as even the lead rider gets a draft from the motorcycle. Watch for riders to lean and bump each other as they vie for the best position to launch their sprint for the finish. Riders may move forward or back, and side to side but they may not pass the rear axel of the motor bike while it is on the track.

Watch local racer Taylor Olson compete in the 2008 National Championship Keirin heats.
