| Race Report: July 24
Despite cloudy weather which could have turned to rain and cancelled racing, a pack of 44 riders showed up to perform in front of an excited crowd. The clouds slowly faded to allow very good racing conditions with almost no wind. The evening was warm and humid, though. Thankfully, the concession stand introduced Cold Stone Creamery ice cream for the first time this year. We hope to have a full food menu very soon. We also unveiled several new Velodrome T-shirt designs. Show your colors! The evening's racing included two State Championships (the Women's 40-lap Scratch Race and the Men's 60-lap Scratch Race) and some strong performances from newly-upgraded and visiting riders. Some highlights:
- Linsey Hamilton withstood a strong sprint finish, holding off Elena Dorr for the Women's State Championship.
- Junior rider, Chazz Martin, visiting from Northbrook, rode to an easy Cat 4,5 Omnium victory, winning 2 of 3 races.
- Brian Crosby made a statement with his 4th Omnium victory of the season and won the Men's State Championship Scratch Race (see below).
- Peter Schweich took home a 2nd place in the Cat 1,2 Omnium in his first event in that field.
- Andy Frye, in his 2nd night as a Cat 3 rider, won that field's Omnium.

Featured Race: Men's 60 Lap Scracth MN State Championship
Brian Crosby continued his winning ways Thursday night with a display of innovative, fast and smart racing in the Men's State Championship Scratch Race. The race started fast with a determined pack that was really creative, trying to find a good combination among riders from three different categories. But it was far from easy for the large group of riders who aren't used to racing together. For example when Crosby and Dan Schueller had to give up an early breakaway after only a couple of laps as they struggled to find a rhythm. Multiple short attacks marked the race, with the pack able to maintain order until the final laps. In the end, the 2007 hierarchy was respected as the rewards went to the 3 top riders of Cat. 1:
- Brian Crosby
- Andy Kruse
- Chris Ferris

Rider Profile: Chris Ferris
No contest so far, Chris is one of the top sprinters on the track. Ferris has a strong sprinter profile as proved by his standings in the Salsa King Of the Sprint series: 3 Races and 3 victories. With his recent 3rd place in the 60 lap scratch race, Chris is now showing that he isn't just a sprinter but a complete athlete who can perform in multiple disciplines. Here are samples of our interview just after he won the MN Keirin State Championship two weeks ago. (click here to read the full interview) "This race was really intense and it was really good biking. From my experience, that Keirin felt like nationals." "I knew that I didn't want to take the lead in the pack behind the motorbike, but that was all I planned." "I think reading the race is probably the most important point and the most difficult to learn." | |
