Schwan's USA CUP and Schwan's USA CUP Weekend Accepting Applications
USA CUP LogoSchwan's USA CUP Weekend (July 11-13) and Schwan's USA CUP (July 15-19) are still accepting referee applications.  Schwan's USA CUP Weekend is currently accepting referees age 14 and older while Schwan's USA CUP is accepting referees age 15 and older.

If you are already registered to referee this tournament, encourage your fellow referees to sign up.

USA CUP Weekend and USA CUP will host boys and girls teams U09-U19 from across the nation and around the world.

To apply for our tournaments, please visit our website and follow the "Tournament Application" link on the right hand side.
Mandatory Schwan's USA CUP Rules Meeting
Schwan's USA CUP Weekend and Schwan's USA CUP require all referees officiating in the tournaments to attend one mandatory rules meeting. All rules meetings are held in the Schwan Center Gold Room A. 
 
Referees MUST attend one of the following rules meetings:
  • Wednesday, July 9, 2008 - 1800
  • Thursday, July 10, 2008 - 1800
  • Monday, July 14, 2008 - 1800
Referees will also receive their complimentary tournament shirt, bag, and flipping coin at the referee rules meeting.  
 
Additionally, there will be a referee photo taken prior to Opening Ceremonies on Monday, July 14 at 19:00.
Referee Availability Confirmation 
All referees currently registered for the Schwan's USA CUP Weekend or Schwan's USA CUP must return to their online application to confirm their tournament availability before they will be assigned any games.  
 
To confirm your availability, visit our website and follow the Tournament Application link on the right hand side.  Once you have logged in, click on the tournament you wish to on confirm for. Select 'Yes' from the confirmation drop down menu and be sure to click submit at the bottom of the page.
 
If you have not previously logged into your NSC Referee account, your username is your first name plus your 5-digit NSC Referee ID# (ie. Sam00002). Your password is the word soccer plus your 5-digit NSC Referee ID# (ie. Soccer00002).
 
Referees should confirm their availability for both Schwan's USA CUP Weekend and Schwan's USA CUP by midnight on Monday, June 30.
Referee Housing at Schwan's USA CUP
The National Sports Center onsite residence hall is filling quickly.  If you are a referee 18 or older and you plan to stay in the on-site residence hall, you need to book your space online as soon as possible. 
 
To reserve a space in the residence hall, visit our website and follow the Tournament Application link on the right hand side. Once you have logged in, click on the Travel/Lodging button next to Schwan's USA CUP.
 
Complete your arrival and departure information and pay your deposit and you are set to go!

Schwan's USA CUP is happy to announce it's list of 2008 tournament assessors.  These assessors are used to evaluate referees performance during the tournament.

Referee Activities at Schwan's USA CUP 
Don't forget about all the fun activities that take place during the tournament.
  • Friday, July 11: 1905 - Minnesota Thunder vs. Carolina Railhawks - NSC Stadium
  • Saturday, July 12: 1900 - VIP Barbeque Bash
  • Saturday, July 12: 2100 - Coach vs. Referee Soccer Game
  • Sunday, July 13: Second annual Pub Crawl to Minneapolis for a night of fun.
  • Monday, July 14: First annual bowling and laser tag tournament - start forming your teams now.
  • Monday, July 14: 1945 - Opening Ceremonies
  • Tuesday, July 15: 1935 - Minnesota Thunder vs. Burnley FC (England) - NSC Stadium
  • Thursday, July 17: 2100 - Coach vs. Referee Soccer Game
There's also plenty of other activities taking place during the week such as open ice skating, open golf, open putting, velodrome racing, Mall of America, Minnesota Twins game. Some of these activities have additional costs to the participant.

Meet the Schwan's USA Cup Committee
Watch this space in each edition to meet the NSC and Schwan's USA CUP Referee Committee and Tournament Staff.
 
Who: Gentry Thatcher
 
Role: Schwan's USA CUP Referee Committee, Tournament Assessor 
Duties: Gentry joined the NSC Referee Committee in the fall of 2006.  He has brought he has brought a fresh outlook and new ideas to the committee. 
Resides: From St. Louis, MI and currently resides in Edina, MN
 
How Long: Gentry has been a referee for 37 years and he attended his first USA CUP in 1992.   
Other Roles: Gentry achieved a USSF grade 6 and is currently an emeritus 15.  Additionally, he is an assessor, mentor, and instructor as well as the Assistant State Referee Administrator.
Referee Pay Increase
The National Sports Center is happy to announce increased referee pay for 2008. In an effort to attract additional quality referees, the NSC has increased referee fees for 2008. This is the fourth consecutive year of referee pay increases at the NSC.
