Greetings!
As I write this, the days continue to get shorter at a rate of about two minutes per day. There is something womb-like about this time of year, as darkness wraps around us like a quilt; an indigo sky accented with diamond stars and alabaster moon. A time of reflection, of quiet and inner growth.
Our tendency is to shun the darkness, to fill it's still, silent void with artificial light and sound and frantic movement. In the preparations for our most holy days, the coming of the light, perhaps we need to step outside, figuratively and literally.
Take the time to embrace the darkness, experience the calm, breathe in the clarity. Open your senses to the subtleties of the season: the graceful bending branches of unadorned trees casting sensuous shadows on moonlit moraines, the wistful wails of coyotes, heard across miles of crystalline air, the salubrious scent of new-fallen snow. Whether you experience this place physically or in the landscapes of your mind, the effect is the same. Peace in your personal world.
I, along with the entire Fine Print family, wish you inner peace this holiday season.

Nature Photography Summit
|
|
February 16 through February 21, 2010
The 16th Annual North American Nature Photographers Association Summit in Reno will be one of the
most unique Summits NANPA has ever produced. It's not just that they changed the name of the event to Nature Photography Summit to better
reflect their offerings, but also that they have decided to add more value
and networking opportunities to the revamped schedule. The Summit will
hold many firsts:
- a new question and answer session following each keynote presentation;
- special vendor presentations that will be held simultaneously with
the breakouts, giving you the opportunity to hear about some of the
latest products on the market and how they work; and
- a new Workshop Weekend - where you will be able to learn about specific subjects in a more focused way.
Of course, this will take place in Reno, Nevada,
where the sun shines for over 300 days of the year...

Jump Start a Flagging or Fledgling Art Career
|
|
During a recent marketing consultation, an artist asked me what he
could do to revitalize his career. He's been successfully selling
paintings for nearly thirty years, but in the last two or three has
seen his sales diminish.
Rather than chalk it up to the sluggish
economy, I asked him what he had been doing before that worked. He said
he'd mostly sold through galleries and occasionally taught workshops.
He also sold prints through a local interior design firm, and
advertised in a couple of magazines. The gallery sales had sustained
him - but after 9-11, he gradually lost six out of the ten galleries he
was in. And of the remaining four, two hadn't sold anything of his in
over a year. His print sales had also dwindled. He was unable to afford
print advertising.
"Is anyone buying art anymore?" he lamented.

Let's Live Up to Canada's Green Image
|
|
by Jake Brennan
It's been said before, but it bears repeating: we Canadians just don't appreciate what we have.
Having explored the Flathead Valley in July 2009 as a photographer and
assistant on the ILCP RAVE, I now understand just what so many
environmentalists rave about. This place is truly wild. As soon as you
get up high for a view, the sheer size of it drops your jaw in awe. And
as good as the RAVE photographers are, that size is hard to convey in a
picture, because so far, thankfully, no man-made structures give you a
sense of this valley's scale. It just looks like another pretty Rockies
postcard.
But if you come here and drink the sweet water straight from the river,
hear the wolves howl at night, see the rainbow of wildflower blooms and
smell the pine sap all around you, the Flathead will touch you, too.
Its richness smacks you in the face.
