June MAREA Meeting
Natural Gas Blowout Aftermath
Bradford County Spill
In 2010, permit violations were issued for three out of every four natural gas wells drilled in Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Bordering New York, Bradford is a northern tier county that sits atop the natural gas-rich Marcellus Shale formation. On April 19th of this year, Bradford was the scene of a major blowout. "At approximately 11:45 p.m. on April 19, an equipment failure occurred during well-completion activities, allowing the release of completion fluids from a well at a location in Leroy Township, Bradford County, Pa.," announced Chesapeake Energy's spokesman Brian Grove. The completion fluids Grove referred to were the flowback fluids that returned to the surface after fracking fluids were used to shatter the shale a mile below ground. For the better part of two days, wastewater spilled from the well, contaminating the Towanda Creek in the process.
Michael Shaw, a member of Berks Gas Truth, a grassroots community group fighting drilling in Pennsylvania, visited the site of the spill on April 23rd. Michael is a photojournalist who has been investigating the practice of hydraulic fracturing for the past year. He visited homes that sit only feet from the site of the spill, interviewed neighbors, public officials, and Chesapeake reps, and photographed the aftermath. He'll share what he found in a slide presentation at MAREA's TEK Park meeting at 7 p.m. on June 28th. The meeting is open to the public free of charge.
Following the talk, there will be a networking session and planning meeting for this fall's Pennsylvania Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Festival. Volunteers are needed and anyone with an interest in renewable energy or sustainable living is welcome to participate.
The seventh annual festival will be held September 16-18, 2011 at Kempton in Berks County.
MAREA, which was formed in 2005, is a nonprofit, grassroots educational organization that supports citizen participation in renewable energy and sustainable living projects.

Introducing Sheila and Diane!
We are pleased to introduce you to two important new additions to the MAREA team who you'll be more from in coming newsletters!
Sheila Finch is our new Volunteer Program Manager. Sheila came to MAREA as a student intern, but has agreed to stay on to apply her considerable organizational skills to managing recruitment, training, and coordination of volunteers for the PA Energy Festival. She'll work with the new Volunteer Committee to get the ball rolling on 2011 Energy Fest recruitment in the coming weeks.
Diane Rudolph worked at a MAREA exhibit at an area festival and immediately started imagining how the booth could be improved to better represent our organization. She has taken on the huge job of designing our booth presentation, tracking down the items we need to create an appealing and informative display, figuring out the most efficient way to store and transport them, organizing the volunteers to work at our booth, and working a fair amount of shifts herself.
We're thrilled to be working with Sheila and Diane! Read more about what they're working on in their articles below!

Meet Our Volunteer Program Manager!
Hello! My name is Sheila and I am the new Volunteer Program Manager for MAREA. I will be responsible for recruiting, training, and managing the volunteers who do so much to make the PA Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Festival a success. I'll be working with a new Volunteer Committee to create training sessions, orientation materials, and a volunteer database.
If you've volunteered with us before, look for the following changes in anticipation of this year's festival:
- The call for volunteers - We're developing a focused recruitment campaign by reaching out to our past volunteers, local employers, schools and colleges, service and social clubs.
- Early scheduling - We'll start scheduling volunteers very soon to allow time for orientation sessions closer to the festival.
- Volunteer information on website - We're planning a central location where volunteers can find registration forms and information.
- MAREA Volunteer Database - We're developing a database of our volunteers so we don't need to ask the same information year after year.
The Volunteer Committee is looking for people who want to be actively involved with their community while spending time with fun and engaging people. You'll be helping us in promoting renewable energy technologies, sustainable living innovations, and practices that protect our environment.
We hope you and your friends will join us once again this September. Please contact me by email at mareavolunteers@gmail.com if you have any questions or comments.
Looking forward to meeting and working with all of you.

Meet Our Booth Committee Chair!
The MAREA Booth Committee is working toward increasing the number of events we're participating in to expand public awareness and grow our fine group.
Since "the Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy Association (MAREA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to informing and educating the public on renewable energy production, energy efficiency and sustainable living through meetings, workshops, educational materials and energy fairs", our booth will be exhibiting at the events listed below. **We are inviting you to volunteer to work the MAREA booth during any of these dates and times.**
