  • 2010 American Community Survey and Census Data on the Foreign Born by State
    MPI 10th Anniversary Logo

    While the immigrant population of the United States increased by 8.8 million between 2000 and 2010, the impact of this growth varied considerably from state to state in terms of population size and characteristics.

    To facilitate analysis of these differences, the interactive map (on this page) provides national and state-by-state data on immigrant populations from the 1990 and 2000 Decennial Censuses and the 2009 and 2010 American Community Surveys (ACS).

    Click the desired state to generate fact sheets about the demographic & social, language & education, workforce, and income & poverty characteristics.

    A sampling of the types of data included in each of the four fact sheets for each state (based on the 2009 ACS):

    • Demographic and Social: top countries of birth, geographic mobility, children in immigrant families;
    • Language and Education: rates of limited English proficiency and levels of educational attainment, rates of linguistic isolation, and adult English literacy;
    • Workforce: immigrants' share among all, low-wage, and high-wage workers, top occupations and industries, skill underutilization of college-educated immigrants;
    • Income and Poverty: average incomes, income distributions, poverty rates.

    State Rankings (Updated with the 2010 ACS data)

    • Number of Foreign Born by State (1990, 2000, and 2010)
    • Percent Foreign Born by State (1990, 2000, and 2010)
    • Numeric Difference in the Foreign Born by State (1990, 2000, and 2010)
    • Percent Change in the Foreign Born by State (1990, 2000, and 2010)

    New Naturalized Americans

    In addition to the MPI article above, "In Other Words" highly recommends this "Frequently Requested Statistics on Immigrants and Immigration in the United States"

    • Current and Historical Numbers and Shares
    • Demographic, Educational, and Linguistic Characteristics
    • Mexican Immigrants
    • Health Insurance Coverage
    • Workforce Characteristics
    • Geographic Distribution
    • Children with Immigrant Parents
    • Annual Flows
    • Illegal Immigration
    • Immigration Control and Enforcement
    • Naturalization Trends

    As the caption of the accompanying photo says, "Almost 17.5 million immigrants in the United States in 2010 were naturalized US citizens."

    Visiting "Migration Information Source" often is one way to learn about the new Americans among us.

    All "About World Languages"
    AboutWorldLanguages.com

    When readers ask what is the best online source of language information, we often recommend Ethnologue.com, and for good reason.

    The Ethnologue site contains hundreds of fact-filled pages furnished by top linguists around the world.

    We now have another site to recommend. About World Languages is a treasure of language information and multimedia that you can enjoy and share with others.

    The following comes from the website itself, and we couldn't agree more:

    About World Languages (AWL) is a richly linked fully searchable multimedia website with all pages containing a list of useful resources and self-assessment quizzes.

    In addition we offer the following structure:

    • a general section about the languages of the world
    • a general section on language study
    • descriptions of the major language families and their major branches
    • descriptions of the most important and representative languages that belong to the major language families of the world

    The AWL website contains much more than information about individual languages. It also contains information about:

    • The language families that the individual languages belong to,
    • a variety of general topics about language and the study of languages, and
    • an interactive self-test section that allows users to quiz themselves on their knowledge about world languages.

    Take a look now at the list of 170+ languages that Language Line Services interprets (spoken) and translates (written)...

    Then read all about these languages and much more at About World Languages.
