Today is International Translation Day |
 |
A Message from Louis Provenzano.
Today, September 30th, is a very special day for language professionals around the world.
Today is International Translation Day. Celebrating language professionals since 1953.
A perfect opportunity for me to recognize and thank our company's fine interpreters and translators for the important work that you do each and every day.
Today I will soon join hundreds of interpreters at the 25th annual International Medical Interpreters Association conference, where I will share my thoughts and dreams for the growth, and the certification, of your profession.
I truly envy our interpreters and translators because, as each day ends, you can say you made a difference in the lives of so many.
I also thank those hospitals and healthcare professionals who recognize the importance and value of interpreters as a vital element of the care giving team.
Because, after all, quality care begins with quality communication. One cannot exist without the other.
So, please join me and my colleagues at Language Line Services in celebrating an invaluable and increasingly necessary profession.
On behalf of our company, I promise that we will continue to participate in, contribute to, and advocate for all professional language services.
Sincerely,
Louis

Attention: Human Resource Directors, Hospital Administrators, Organizational Training and Development Managers, Physicians and Nurses, Language Access Coordinators, Programs and Risk Managers
The most recent census confirmed that our country is more diverse than ever before. Clinicians aren't insulated from this diversity. Lack of cultural competency can affect quality of care and further increase disparities in healthcare.
New standards and incentives are being created to support cultural competence and more is being done to ensure that healthcare organizations follow through.

National Certification for Medical Interpreters - A Necessary Step for Patient Safety |
 |
The US non-English speaking population grew 140% from 1980 through 2010, according to the US Census Bureau.
Our laws offer provisions to protect that population, but is our infrastructure ready?
Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 states that any entity receiving federal subsidies is not to discriminate, and Executive Order 13166, the HHS Guidance, and CLAS Standards require a language service plan to provide language assistance to Limited English Proficiency (LEP) individuals.
New Joint Commission standards on language access have been instituted. Our legal system already complies by providing certified court and legal interpreters to assist witnesses, plaintiffs or defendants who fall in that category.
The objective is to give LEP individuals meaningful access and communication equal to what an English speaking individual would have when seeking services.
Appropriate language services is also a tool to prevent:
- costly malpractice lawsuits,
- health related loss of revenue, and
- negative health outcomes which could include death.
In the 21st century, Title VI compliance can be just a phone call or a video monitor away via remote interpreting.
Many hospitals already have trained on-site interpreters on staff and companies that provide language services for languages in less demand and not serviced by staff interpreters.

Webinar Series: The National Call to Action to Eliminate Health Care Disparities: Hospitals Answering the Call |
 |
In July 2011, five national health care groups:
- The Association of American Medical Colleges,
- American College of Healthcare Executives,
- American Hospital Association,
- Catholic Health Association of the United States and
- National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems...
Issued a "call to action" to eliminate disparities in care.
As national partners in Equity of Care, these organizations are committed to collaborating on national improvement efforts and assisting hospitals through shared best practices and resources in three focus areas:
- Increasing the collection and use of race, ethnicity and language preference data
- Increasing cultural competency training
- Increasing diversity in leadership
While the organizations have taken action at the national level to draw attention to this important issue, hospitals and health systems have been tackling these challenges locally, making steady progress in each of these areas and working to eliminate disparities in care.
We invite you to join us for a pair of upcoming national webinars to highlight the accomplishments and lessons learned from hospitals and health systems across the country that have taken the lead in their communities on achieving equity of care and how you can join in their efforts.
Read the rest of this invitation to take part in these webinars on:
- Tuesday, October 4 and
- Wednesday, November 16, 2011...
Including lists of featured speakers, and webinar times in your area...
